Where the Heart Takes You

Fairy!Taehyung x Y/n, Y/n x Jungkook

Genre: Fairy au; Fluff, angst, eventual smut

Summary: When you were growing up with your best friend, he insisted that fairies were real. You went along with it for years, until you grew older and thought it time for him to stop and grow up already, too. After a year away, living on your own in a dorm at your university; you find yourself being drawn back to where you call home. Some things changed, some things didn’t. Jungkook still wouldn’t let you go too deep into the forest. Though a walk not so far into it proves he has been right all along.

Warnings: Language, brief violence.

Soft, warm light streamed through the green trees, the patterns created mystical and otherworldly. That was one of the things you loved and missed about this place. And now you had returned. It was beautiful out in the forest, more than you even remembered in your year away from it. You spun and drank in the sun trickling through the treetops, caressing your skin. The way everything was even more pristine then you remembered. How the forest smelt like home.

On one of your spins, you caught the sight of your best friend’s smiling face as he watched you, delighted you were enjoying being back. You stopped to smile at him, his growing wider.

“I missed you.” He said for about the millionth time that day; ever since you stepped foot in his yard. You smiled wistfully at him.

“I missed you too, Jungkook.” You replied for the same amount as he’d said it. He strolled over towards you, hands shoved deep in his pockets, an easygoing smile stretching on his handsome face. You noted again how he’d gotten taller, more muscular. But he was still the same Jungkook you knew growing up from toddlers to last year.

“You’re glad to be back.” This was a statement, not an inquiry. It was clear to him how happy you were that you’d returned. You nodded as he took one last step, and then he was in front of you. He wrapped his arms around your frame, hugging you tightly. It wasn’t uncommon for him to do this. You both had always been a bit affectionate with each other. He held you like that a moment longer than usual, then let go. When he pulled back, that same peculiar look was in his eyes; the one you’d gotten used to over the last few years. But you were none the wiser to it’s meaning. You sometimes wondered what he was thinking about when he looked at you like that.

“How can I not be?” You smiled as you stepped away from him to twirl again. You inhaled deeply and sighed at the beautiful scent of your surroundings. The crisp air, the freshness of the leaves, of warm earth and floral loveliness.

You weren’t too far in the forest. Jungkook wouldn’t let you go too far, he never had. He warned about fairies and that running into one would be bad. You had always thought he was playing, even when he looked so solemn about it. He would tell you there was much about the forest that was too dangerous for you to venture too deep. You secretly wished he was right about fairies and not just joking. You read how beautiful they were, how charming they could be. And dangerous, indeed. You had an odd fascination with them, and you partly blamed Jungkook for that. He would pour over book after book about them as you grew up, keeping a journal he would write in what he once referred to as ‘useful information’. It was an oddity to you when he claimed to not like fairies, yet he read up on them so much. Something about being in the forest again after so much time made you think about those times that the two of you quietly read next to each other. You giggled as you recalled those younger years, spinning and spinning. And oh how you loved to spin and dance and sing.

You were so preoccupied in the sensations of your surroundings and memories that flooded your whole being, and Jungkook was so caught up in watching you, that neither one of you noticed the figure that appeared out of seemingly no where, watching the two of you with amusement. But really, he was only watching you.

“Ah, isn’t it so beautiful today?!” You all but sang, stretching your arms up to the heavens, then out again, still spinning. A soft amused chuckle pulled at your attention. It didn’t sound like Jungkook, even more musical than he usually sounded. And it wasn’t in the direction you thought he was still standing.

A gasp from Jungkook finally pulled you to a complete stop; knowing for sure now it wasn’t him that had laughed. You looked at him curiously, but his eyes were wider than normal, staring frozen in horror at a spot behind you. You whirled and a gasp fell from your own lips. Though yours was nothing like that of your bestfriend’s.

A man, tall, lean, ethereal, was standing feet away, smiling an amused smile. His eyes appraised you and a flurry of swirling wings flapped in your heart, making it feel as if it were to ascend to the skies. He seemed to find you appealing somehow, though you yourself never thought you were pretty. Even when Jungkook insisted you were. You were sure he was just doing his duty as your friend. But this stranger, so beautiful and elegant; he looked at you as if you were beautiful. Pink dusted your cheeks and a soft approving sound left him, deep honey.

He took a step closer, a lovely, soft expression deepening. Hands were suddenly wrapping painfully tight around your wrists, pulling you against a chest. Jungkook let one wrist go to push you behind him defensively. He was being rather ridiculous in your mind, this stranger had yet to present any hint of danger to you. And it was rude. You weren’t his to defend as if you were a girlfriend. Even as you were held in a way to be blocked from sight, your eyes were still on the man before you, just the same.

“Get away from us.” Jungkook all but growled. It surprised you. He was really out of order here. The man tsked and stepped closer. He couldn’t be more than a few years older than Jungkook or yourself.

“Why would I do that? It is of no importance to me to stay away.” He even sounded more beautiful than anyone you’d ever heard speak. Even more than Jungkook.

“I’m warning you, stay back!“ Jungkook said defensively. The strangers eyes had been on yours almost the whole time since you first caught sight of him. They now went to Jungkook’s, a brief look of something dangerous in his eyes, a challenge, perhaps. Then he was staring at you again. Jungkook’s grip tightened, making you whine from the pain. The man looked concerned at this, immediately glaring at Jungkook’s hands on you.

“You are hurting her.” He said calmly, but it felt dangerously like he was upset over this. “You shouldn’t hurt beautiful girls.” He thought you were beautiful? Jungkook let out a spiteful laugh, further shocking you.

“Speak for yourself.” He gritted through his teeth. You glanced up at him, his jaw was set, head tilted up. Why was he trying to seem like the toughest man he could be? What was up with him? You weren’t his girlfriend, and even as a friend, shouldn’t you get a choice if you like someone and he not get like this unless you were in danger? The man’s smile disappeared, then he sighed.

“You think I would ever hurt her?” He tsked again. Jungkook’s hands were hard as stones on you, and it really was getting too painful.

“It’s what your kind do, is it not?” Jungkook said as if it were a challenge. His kind? What did he mean? Did he know this guy? Had he moved here when you were gone? Did he think or know this guy was a fuckboy and was trying to keep you from being used?

“You seem to be under some impression that we always hurt beautiful things.” The man shook his head and smiled again. “It is our duty and pleasure to heal beautiful things, to help them grow, to make them even more beautiful, if that is their wish. Beautiful girls are just the same. I won’t hurt her. You are thinking of a different kind-”

“I know exactly what kind, and you are not much better!” Jungkook interrupted, then sneered. The man’s smile dropped again, looking more serious this time, almost sad. You wanted to go to him. No one that beautiful should ever look that sad.

“I will say it again. You are hurting her. And you mustn’t hurt her.” The man stepped closer, slowly advancing on Jungkook and yourself. Jungkook started backing the two of you away.

“And I will say again, go away. Leave us alone; go make mischief in another part of the forest. Don’t hurt her.” Your back brushed a tree, Jungkook was unaware how close he had you to one. The man’s eyes lit up as he noted this, his smile spreading. He stepped away towards the nearest tree to himself. Jungkook started to loosen his grip ever so slightly.

“You are trying my patience too much, boy. Perhaps I shall go a different direction after all.” He said and then flashed a brilliant smile at you before disappearing behind a tree. You blinked. He did go behind it, right? Not through it?

“That was close.” Jungkook breathed out, slowly letting go of you, stepping a few feet away, running his hands through his hair. “That was really too close.” He looked scared as he surveyed the trees and rocks. “We should leave now, while we can. And we will never step foot in here again. Promise me?” He wasn’t even looking at you. You realized he was now looking at the tree that man had gone behind. As if he were waiting in case he returned.

Warm, soft hands wound around your waist from behind, gentle but sure. A face came next to yours, the faintest chuckle could be heard before lips so close to your ear made you shiver.

“A different direction indeed was best. You are in my arms at last.” That beautiful voice, the same as the stranger’s, whispered in your ear. At first you were too surprised to respond. Jungkook remained unaware. “Come with me, my flower? Come with me and let me show you a wondrous world that awaits you. Your beauty suits it perfectly.” He cooed in your ear. So soft, so lovely. You were about to lean into his arms, to tell him anything he wanted, but you wanted him to keep speaking. “Come with me? You have to say you will, you have to say yes.” He all but sang. Should you reply to him? “Please come with me?” He sounded even more appealing now. Alluring. His hand caressed your waist so gently, you shivered and he chuckled again. “What’s your name, sweet flower?” He asked in that velvety, deep voice of his.

“Y/n.” You whispered, unable to speak louder. And part of you was worried once Jungkook noticed what was happening behind him, he would overreact again.

“Such a lovely name.” The man sighed, pressing his nose bellow your ear.

“What’s your name?” You asked in return, hoping to know what to call him. He chuckled again, then sighed.

“Tae. I go by Tae. I do not usually tell my full name, it can be trouble, you see? Only a very few know. But, I find I want you to know. I need you to know. If you ever want me, or need me, for whatever reason; you only need to call my full name. You say it, and I will be there.” He wasn’t making much sense, or were you too wrapped up in his touch, the way his soft breath caressed over your skin, the way your body seemed like it was filled with bubbles and butterflies and light as the leaves swaying in the wind that you missed his meaning? Was he saying he wanted you to call him? If he wanted you to, you would. He nuzzled by your ear again. “My name is Taehyung. But, darling, please use it carefully. And do not tell your friend. He would cause all kinds of trouble knowing it.” Taehyung. You sighed and started to turn towards him. One of his hands dropped from you to reach back into the tree. Wait, you thought, into? You gasped, blinking wildly, trying to make sense of it.

“Come with me?” He asked again in that oh so alluring voice. Jungkook made a choked gasping sound, now aware. You heard his shoes turn in the ground, dirt and grass crunching beneath them, just as you looked back at Taehyung, his eyes alight, pleased grin spread across his beautiful face.

“No!” Jungkook yelled, he grabbed onto you and pulled you harshly to free you from Taehyung, who let you be pulled from him, looking hurt. How could Jungkook be so rude?! He tried to pull you further away but you stepped closer to Taehyung with as much force as you could manage against such strength. Taehyung stepped closer to you as well, and Jungkook yanked harsher on your wrist.

“Stay away from her, leave her alone! I won’t let you take her!” He yelled. Take you? He didn’t want you to have sex with this guy; and sure, he was perhaps trying to be a good friend. But how can he be so blunt and rude about it in front of Taehyung? You might not sleep with him, anyways. And either way it wasn’t Jungkook’s decision.

“I am not taking her. Again, you seem to have me confused with the other kind. I told you, I am of service to nature, not to it’s destruction or harm. And that includes the sweet flower whom you are hurting yet again. I told you. Do not hurt her. I do not like it.” Taehyung stepped closer and Jungkook tried again to pull you further away from him.

“Jungkook, what’s wrong with you? Why are you acting like this? He seems nice; let me go.” You glared up at your bestfriend; his face was unreadable. His grip tightening even more, again.

“He’s a fairy. And fairies are not nice.” Jungkook said so low and with such contempt it stunned you.

“But…” You couldn’t believe he was using that yet again to try to keep you away from something. “Jungkook, a fairy? Come on, why are you starting up with this again?” He didn’t let go and his expression didn’t change; his eyes remained trained on Taehyung’s. You glanced over at Tae, thinking maybe to apologies for your friend; but Taehyung was looking bemusedly at you again, almost as if you were some sweet innocent child that didn’t know about something in the world.

“I told you. Fairies are real. And he is one of them. Remember everything we read?” You thought it over, recalling what you read more easily as you’d not long before been thinking of those times with Jungkook. You stared at Taehyung, looking him over with new eyes. He was ethereally beautiful. So supposedly were fairies. He seemed ageless, young, but wise and mature. There was a charm about him; and a slight mischief in his eyes, his smirk he now gave you.

“A…fairy…?” You asked more to yourself. His smile widened as he beamed down at you.

“That I am.” You tried to step closer again, but Jungkook prevented you.

“No! Don’t get near him! He was trying to take you!” Jungkook shouted. You looked a him, glaring harder.

“If he was trying to take me, then he would have already. He had his arms around me for a few minutes before you realized.” You informed. Panic overtook your bestfriend, before he then glared so lethally at Taehyung, you were actually worried for the fairy.

“You idiot, he can’t just take you. That’s another kind. He can only try to convince you to come with him. But if you go with him, that’s it. He will have you and there is no going back. And that is how he would take you. He abducts only if you agree to allow it. It’s the rule of his kind.” Jungkook spat. This stung more than his grip. He was being hostile to you, you. His best friend. You weren’t an idiot. You just recalled less than he did about these things, and it had been a while since you thought more deeply about such a topic. Taehyung shrugged, unimpressed by all this, almost bored.

“If that’s true, then you can let go of me now.” You looked up at Jungkook again. He blinked at you, stunned, if not a little hurt.

“Yes, let the girl go from your grasp, boy.” Taehyung said all too sweet and calm. He came closer, but Jungkook didn’t hold you tighter this time. Tae bent to eye level, smiling so beautifully at you. “I really won’t harm her. She’s much too beautiful to resist, too.” His feathery touch over your hair had your breath catching in your throat; then fingers brushed your cheek. “So very beautiful. Ah, that blush, it does things to me I cannot explain. In all my years, how is it such that only now a woman like this has appeared. Hmm.” He leaned closer, curiousness alight in his enchanting gaze. His eyes were brighter than a normal humans. Warm brown, but bright like they were illuminated; and the deeper you stared, the more lights and colors you saw in them. They were so mesmerizing, so fully captivating, you felt as if you were falling into them to float as if in outer-space, free of gravity’s hold. And you didn’t mind one bit if you did float into them. He appraised you again, then tilted his head.

“A curious thing. I sense something different about you. I do not understand. What is it about you that is different?” He asked to himself. He leaned closer and you wanted to close your eyes and hope he would kiss you. He smelled so sweet and inviting, unlike anything you had ever smelled before. His eyes so affectionately staring into yours, his smile so lovely. You really wanted his lips on yours. Almost as if he knew that was what you were thinking, he leaned in even closer, eyes going to your lips.

“NO DON’T!” Jungkook pulled but you didn’t budge. “If you let him kiss you, you will be his! He will have complete control over you!” Eyes going wide, you saw clearly the regret in Taehyung’s eyes, before you turned your bewildered stare to Jungkook. He looked so panicked you felt a panic build in you of your own. Taehyung sighed. Jungkook clenched his jaw.

“You could come with me, flower. You would have more fun than this boy could possibly give you, he is so strict and confining.” He had him there. Jungkook could be too strict and confining to you at times. But he could be fun as well. But Tae couldn’t possibly know this given the way Jungkook was reacting to him.

“I won’t let her get taken, too.” Jungkook said in an numb voice so quiet you almost didn’t catch his words. Too? Then you remembered; when you were young, before he got fairy crazed as you called it.

“Your sister.” You gasped, realizing what you thought was his way of coping with his loss was actually what happened after all. His sister had been taken by a fairy. Jungkook’s jaw tightened further, pain filling his eyes, and you regretted mentioning it even if it happened too fast to stop.

“Your sister? She was taken?” You looked at Tae, his honey voice was filled with concern, and it was there in his eyes as well. Jungkook seemed to think it an act as he growled beside you now. “You saw it happen, then, to be so sure. How did it happen?”

“That’s none of your business!” Jungkook spat. Taehyung looked sad.

“Oh, but it is. It is very much my business as I am a fairy and I am…” He stopped, looking as if he was about to give too much away. What had he said about knowing his full name? It could cause trouble. What did that mean? “I simply need to know how. All you have to tell me is if she was forcibly taken or not.” Taehyung waited patiently, and though Jungkook did not trust him, he wavered. You were sure he still hoped to find her. And if trusting a fairy meant finding her, he just might.

“Forcibly.” Is all Jungkook gave, pain riddled in his voice. Taehyung looked frightened and then composed his expression, though he was still visibly sad.

“I am truly sorry, boy. That I would not wish on anyone.” He said with earnest. He sighed, looking at the sky before looking at Jungkook again. “I was unaware dark fairies were this shallow in the forest. Tell me. you would not bring her here now if it was near here that you lost your sister. How much deeper in were you?” Jungkook refused to answer this time.

“They were past the tree and bolder, the ones with some odd symbols on them.” You informed. Jungkook may not trust Taehyung, but you felt somehow you could. He nodded, grateful.

“Fairy warding, to be sure. I shall check it out. And the others should be warned.”

“What business is it to you!” Jungkook bellowed, startling both you and Taehyung. Tae looked even more sad at this.

“You know. You knew since you knew I didn’t just take her. I am a light fairy. I won’t hurt her, or you. And it is my business to look into dark fairy activity, and if I learn of their activity and locations, must report them. If they are where they are supposed to stay away from, by order of the light queen, it is imperative I report it.”

“Then get on with it.” Jungkook gritted through his teeth. Taehyung eyed the two of you, pondering something.

“I think I shall escort you back. It will be safer.” Taehyung gently gripped your wrist. It felt protective, but it didn’t hurt like Jungkook’s grip on you.

“Like hell!” Jungkook yelled, and you barely caught his motion as he swung something at Taehyung. It made contact with Tae and he cried out in pain as you pulled from Jungkook to use both hands to check on him. Taehyung lifted his free hand in defense, but didn’t let go of you as Jungkook used his full body in motion to strike another blow.

Taehyung dropped to the ground, cowering and scared. Couldn’t Jungkook see he was trying to not hurt either of you but to help, and all Jungkook was doing was hurting you both? He struck again and Taehyung went out cold. Jungkook grabbed your hand and ran, pulling you along. You had no choice but to go with him.

He ran all the way back to his house, slamming the door and throwing the long object across the room were it clattered by the fireplace. You looked at it with more scrutiny now you could see it plainly. It was iron. You gasped.

“Jeon Jungkook, how dare you hurt him with iron!” You shrieked. He just glared at you for a few moments, then walked into the hall.

“You can have my room. You are staying here again, after all. But I think it best to have your old room back. I didn’t change much. In case you moved back.” He said tiredly and then walked into his old room. You blinked tears out of your eyes, heading to the familiar room at the very end of the hall.

He really hadn’t changed it much. Even your bedspread was still there. Or he had placed it back when you told him you were coming back.

You sat on your bed, hearing the familiar quiet squeaks. The sun filtered in all the windows on both sides. Staring out at the forest, you hoped Taehyung was alright. That Jungkook was alright. That you would be alright. But nothing seemed right anymore. Not since…You sighed and watched the leaves sway. Things were the same, and yet they were different. And you couldn’t place it all together.
