warmth floods through nesta’s being at the mention of ember – of the unlikely affection they share for one another. nesta has never known a mother with a heart as open as bryce’s. even as a child, she had only been tolerated by her own mother when she was on her very best behaviour. paraded like a prize pony if she was lucky. the mothers of her peers shared the same disdain for her - for other children too, she later realised. being looked upon with indifference by a matriarch was as natural as breathing, and she had never known to crave fondness from her mother; or even what a mother figure could be like until she had witnessed feyre’s bond with her nephew. ember’s kindness towards her had solidified her newfound ideas of what motherhood should be; of the limitless tenderness she now intended to raise her own children with in the very distant future. when she possessed limitless tenderness.
a smile graces nesta’s features and she leans in closer to the reflection of bryce in the spelled mirror. the redhead feels like a mirage; barely real. if she reaches out to touch the glass, she wonders if it will ripple beneath her fingertips. but she is real. the knowledge makes her smile a little brighter. she could count her true friends on one hand, and bryce was a welcome addition. although the circumstances that had brought them together had been abnormal and unnerving, she finds herself thankful for them. “let her know that there just might be a way,” she begins, almost coy, her mind drifting to the harp. it would involve retrieving it, which would be easy enough with the way it answered to her ( called to her wanderlust sometimes ) but she didn’t doubt doing so would cause more of a rift if the others found out.
nesta masks the thought from her features, focusing instead on bryce’s words. she thinks she’d like to be another kid to fuss over, to be fussed over at all. and although she isn’t yet bored of her world, she is curious about bryce’s – about the music and the way they tell their stories, about their society; so connected where there’s is fractured along neat lines. she’s even curious about the food. if fae food had been such a revelation, she’s sure to be blown away by dishes crafted from all manner of creature. but she doubts anything would be more delicious than sharing a meal with bryce and her loved ones. “— if i can make it work perhaps i can bring my friends to meet you... i’m not entirely sure they believe what i’ve told them about you. but i’d like to come alone first. you and i have a lot of catching up to do."
" my mom hasn't stopped talking about you since her visit. " bryce flops down onto her couch, a small sigh passing over her lips as her head cocks in the direction of the nesta's own figure, a mirror image of her own position. it's rare that ember meets a soul she doesn't like, especially someone who clearly could use a mother figure in their life, but every time she brings up nesta it makes bryce smile.
bryce lost something the day that danika and the pack of devils were killed, but so did ember. her best friend had been like a sister to her, and because of it her mother had taken her in like one of her own. a daughter who longed for a proper mother, and a mother with so much love in her heart that she gave it to whoever needed it most. for a while, bryce forgot that she wasn't the only one that suffered. meeting nesta filled a little crack that was deeper than either one of them knew.
" did i tell you she asked me if there was a way to invite you over for dinner, sometime? " a smirk dances on her lips, the image of nesta's hulking mate and her stepping through portals into midgard for a few hours in her realm more amusing than it probably should be. cassian's wings wouldn't necessarily be out of place in a world where vanir and mortals mingle alike, but the way he seems to glare at anyone who steps a little too close to @moondevoured might ruffle some feathers. or who knows, maybe he'd come back with some new best friends.
" she said to tell you that if you ever get bored of your world and want to be introduced to modern technology, that you should come by. she'd love to have any excuse to make a big dinner and have another kid to fuss over. "
