Could be that destroying the crystal was an accident as well. Ifrit could have gone to smite Solheim for the theft, or to bap them upside the head and tell them to “put ‘em back, guys,” and then Solheim lashed out and Ifrit reflex smashed them. A stupid, tragic accident. The Star Scourge could be a mix of Solheim’s resentment and Ifrit’s own anger and despair. It would explain why it devours light, and why there aren’t any Fire Blessed left. The Star Scourge would be drawn to them first.

In Square games especially the FF games the big crystals traditionally comes in sets of 4 (Even the big Materia in FF7 comes in a set of 4). Based on this and the fact that FF15 only has one crystal I've always thought that Solheim's crime was probably destroying the other 3 crystals (even the one we see is looks damaged). Now weather this was done purpose or not is the question. The game does have a theme of the consequences of using something you shouldn't as a power source. So maybe that it?

Could be! We don't have confirmation either way. My personal hc is that it was something else, but the set of 4 crystals and 3 getting destroyed does make sense. I can also see Solheim perhaps stealing or using the other 3 crystals for something they shouldn't and Ifrit destroying the crystals in retribution for whatever they were trying to do with it.
