Just Us and The Music

The evening had drawn on in the usual way of these all too frequent professional dinners. There was talk of alliances, political dealings, who had started a war with who else, and if you happened to end up in the wrong corner of the rooms there was talk of exotic (to be polite) women.

All in all, Y/N was wishing for it never to happen again, unfortunately they knew that holding these dinners, sometimes aboard the Enterprise and sometimes attending them elsewhere, was all part of keeping the peace.

But damn, was keeping the peace boring as hell when it wasn’t down right disturbing. There were certain people that Y/N remembered from other business soirees, people that they knew better than to interact with more than mandatory formalities at the door.

The only thing that seemed to set this event apart from the rest was dancing, after dinner was served there was a ball room reserved for the guests to dance in. As Kirk guided Y/N into the ball room for the only part of the evening they had truly been interested in, they looked around the dimly lit room with a live band playing an odd kind of music that Y/N wasn’t familiar with.

Apparently Jim was rather well versed in this music, “Oh this one’s good for dancing to,” He whispered to Y/N and pulled them further into the room. When they got to the middle of the floor Kirk gave them a twirl and smiled at the way the movement worked down Y/N’s body, the first time this evening that they looked as though they were really enjoying themselves.

“Maybe we could just do this for the rest of the night?” Y/N asked softly as they wrapped their arms around Jim to continue dancing.

“Mmm, maybe,” Jim thought out loud, “But then again we do have to sleep sometime, and we do have to get back-” He was cut off as Y/N put a finger to his lips.

‘Shhh’ they mimed, “No more, just us and the music,” Y/N looked at Kirk with a mischievous smile.

Jim smiled and shook his head good naturedly, “You win this one, love,” Kirk said and kissed Y/N softly on the cheek before twirling them again.
