I did this for my siblings and brother-in-law. My husband and I are 10-12 years older than our siblings, so when they entered their teen years I would take them shopping around their birthdays and the holidays with a $20-50 limit and tell them to pick out what they liked with a list of what was already in the hope chest and what necessities were still needed but simple awesome finds were okay to add too. I'd occasionally just sneak basic kitchen items like a can opener or some solid color hotpads into them that I would pick up individually whenever I went grocery shopping. And I kept their items in separate storage totes with their names on them and when they moved out themselves, I gave them the totes.

Because let me remind/inform you! Starting your household from scratch?! Is FUCKING EXPENSIVE! Between the dishware, cutlery, pots and pans and everything in between to a simple can opener to the towels for the bathroom to the sheets for your bed to the basic cleaning supplies of a broom, scrub brush, and cleansers? It very quickly adds up to hundreds of dollars and not everything can be bought at the dollar store.

So yes, I fully agree. Bring back hope chests for children. And depending on the home life you have, it can be a fun bonding experience between family members or it can be the box that's a physical representation that you WILL get out of there one day and use it to dream of what YOUR home will look like when you do.

I really love the concept of the hope chest when adapted to modern values. Putting aside nice things in a chest as you grow up so that when you move out you have things to make a home with???? like???? sign me up?????
