Geek Alphabet - Tumblr Posts

Currently, I'm working on a geek alphabet, with one illustration for each letter in the alphabet. It is, to say the least, a huge undertaking. But I'm pretty proud of the results. Here's a preview of what I have finished so far.
Can we all agree that the TNG Enterprise is the canonical Enterprise?

Guys, you don't even know how absurdly proud of this I am. Feathered dinosaurs are absurdly fun to draw, and I am super, super pleased with how this turned out.

I am ridiculously proud of how this turned out.
(When I was a kid, I was so addicted to the X-Men cartoon. Phoenix was one of my favorite characters, because she was strong and awesome and multi-dimensional.)

When I was in art school, I was discouraged from drawing anything cartoonish or anime-like. Sometimes outright forbidden.
On the one hand, being forced to learn the foundations of anatomy without leaning on cartooning as a crutch made me a better artist. But for a long time I was sort of ashamed of my cartoon-style art. Whenever I did something that wasn't "realistic", I felt compelled to show off some of my "real" art as well. Gradually, though, my style has drifted back toward anime since graduating and I've gotten much less self-conscious about it. Even now, though, with the geek alphabet series I'm working on, I'm hesitant to promote images like this one because my more realistic stuff is "better". Which is stupid. Cartoons and anime are what sparked my passion for art, what got me to practice drawing for hours a day, what gave me the interest in going to art school in the first place.
Anyway. Rant over. Q is finished. I'm pleased with it. The end.

It's been a long time since I've had time to do any more letters in this series, but I've decided that I am going to do my damndest to finish these by the end of the year. Too bad I've still got six letters to go...
