Watching Giant Robo is obligatory for any and every mecha fan. Its only flaw is being too short.

Why you should watch the Giant Robo OVA

First, to answer some questions:
1. Are there Giant Robos??
Yes. His name is Giant Bobo Giant Robo.
2. What even IS Giant Robo??
He’s a giant robo what else were you expecting
(twelve year old for scale)

Okay but seriously:
First of all, I’m specifically talking about Giant Robo the Animation: The Day The Earth Stood Still, aka Giant Robo OVA
there’s like another anime and several manga and a really old live action TV show but I’m not talking about those

So what is this whole thing about anyway?
Giant Robo is a soap opera in which an old scientist man’s family both tries to prevent the destruction of the energy supply of the world AND tries to save the world’s energy supply

Wait, soap opera?? I thought you said this was a giant robo anime??

Okay… So why is it a soap opera then??
so many twists and turns
Who is the villain?? The answer may surprise you
BIG EMOTION AND DRAMA and also every set piece is so damn cool it can only be a soap opera
just trust me on this
(A MacGuffin, babey!!)

Other things of note:
a kickass all orchestra soundtrack
- (featuring a full opera song, “Una Furtiva Lagrima”, which is a straight banger)
it’s technically an OVA so it’s only 7 episodes long
- (they’re each around 40min to an hour long)
it’s a love letter to GR’s creator, Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s whole catalogue of work so if you’re in the know there are so many easter eggs
It’s largely set in China! With a bunch of Chinese aesthetics!
- (also two of the major players are Chinese/German mixed)

Unfortunate truths:
MAJOR Epilepsy warning!! There are a lot of flashing lights, especially during the flashback scenes (I’m sorry, I’m sorry)
the English dub of this is kinda a mess since it was released over the span of 6 years originally. (the rerecording is also kinda terrible imo like the sound mixing is all off)
because of it not being able to use the actual plot of the GR manga, it drops a shitton of characters on you in the last 3 episodes
this is part 7 of 8 that they planned and it shows
- (it was also the only one they ever made) (apparently there are two related manga divorced from this OVA’s reality???)
The grunts look like blackface racist caricatures (they’re decidedly not that but the design looks Bad)
(the flashback part is gorgeous but he's flickering the whole time it actually took me effort to get this screengrab)
(ALL of these dudes are introduced in eps 5+6
they are very cool but the OVA's going from 100 to about 210 real quick haha)

Just ignore the mess of “wait who the heck is that guy??” and enjoy the cool set pieces so you’ll have more fun, I promise it won’t begin to explain itself
(this isn’t even diving into the core themes of the OVA)

Giant Robo is a great time have fun with the robo dad
