Give This Boy A Hug - Tumblr Posts

secrets

The night was streaked with rain, illuminated by lightning, and punctuated with branches clattering across the roof. A bang of thunder too close made him feel like they were under attack.

Pakkun quickly took in his surroundings: in a human house by smell, some sort of library by the scrolls and books lining the shelves in the room. In that room cowered a little boy, his eyes wide and dark while his light white hair stood in as many directions as possible.

The boy was staring silently in shock, hand bleeding over the scroll on the floor.

A summoning contract. This boy had summoned him. He was tiny.

Though Pakkun was young, he was well educated by his mistress the Great Dog Spirit. He knew humans might possibly summon him from one of the few clans that had ties to canines, but he was expecting someone bigger.

Another too close flash and increasingly loud clap had Pakkun scurrying over to the boy hiding under what looked like a desk. The summoning contract below him and a blanket thrown over his head, the boy looked afraid.

“You’re not Kenzo or Tadeo,” the boy murmured as he launched himself under the boy’s blanket. Not being either one didn’t stop the kid from catching and scooping Pakkun up with his blanketed arms.

“Who are they?” Pakkun yipped, then settled down in the warm arms.

“My dad’s summons,” the boy looked on the verge of tears. Another close blast from the weather made the boy clutch him even tighter, shivering. This kid must be scared.

“You can’t summon with the bond someone else has created, kid,” Pakuun chided. His words made the boy cry outright. “Look, I’m here. I answered your call. Now we’re bonded. I’ll stay.” Licking at the tear streaked face he offered, “I’m Pakkun. Who are you?”

“Kakashi,” the boy sighed, releasing a bit of tension, “Hatake Kakashi.”

“You don’t seem big enough to be summoning anyone. Just how old are you?”

“Five,” the boy answered plaintively.

Just a pup, the pug thought, though he himself was not much more than a pup.

He and Kakashi were pulling the last of the pillows into the closet where they had shoved the futon and blankets, finishing the cozy nest far from the ferocious weather. Kakashi shut the door and awakened a glowing seal with a press of chakra. Pakkun watched the boy curl up into the bed, pulling a warm blanket over himself.

“Coming?” He asked the little dog, lifting the corner to welcome Pakkun in.

“Yeah,” Pakuun replied, walking in a small circle several times before settling. “Maybe tomorrow we should try summoning someone bigger. Like think big when you do the hand signs.”

“Mn,” Kakashi replied sleepily, curling around his new friend.

Pakkun wasn’t far behind, drifting to sleep to the feeling of deep comfort and knowing he was where he was meant to be.

I wasn’t going to participate in this year’s Kakashi Week because life, but @badninken posted this and how could anyone not get ideas from that evocative piece.

And it is my birthday, so I do what I want.
