As a kid I kinda just went along with my older(mostly male) sibling and cousins and I didnt understand why playing with them was never fun. Then Katara blew up at Sokka, then Suki kicked Soka's butt, then Katara threw hands with Pakku and I figured out I was angry at the sexism i was facing, and my mom was never there to teach me what to do, but Katara and Suki(as well as other characters down the road) were. And it breaks my heart when people treat Katara the way the Ember Island Players did

In which every young girl who watched this show learned that you do not, in fact, have to put up with sexist bullshit from anyone. Even if they’re an authority figure or an adult, they are in the wrong and you don’t deserve to be devalued because of your gender.

If we can be real for a second, this moment is so important for kids to watch. It is always important for kids to see how to establish boundaries in a relationship and that just because your partner is hurting doesn’t mean that it’s okay for them to mistreat you.
