in mk9 the fact that bi-han says that kuai liang is not worthy of the name sub-zero and that he wore those colors before him is kinda funny. like neither of them are human anymore and both the worst versions of themselves but kuai liang still bears the name “sub-zero” while bi-han has been renamed noob saibot. through the worst kuai liang is the one who keeps “sub-zero” while bi-han sinks further from reclaiming that name. kuai liang fundamentally changed the purpose of the name “sub-zero” that what sub-zero is now cannot be reclaimed by bi-han. through corruption kuai liang is sub-zero, and through redemption he changes sub-zero.
i mean this in a way that is not meant to belittle bi-han, but even if bi-han was able to retire from the lin kuei as sub-zero he would not have had the same impact on the name itself as kuai liang did. sure bi-han is a legendary assassin but kuai liang rewired everything. those colors are a bloody past to bi-han, but to kuai liang they are a reclaimed future.
kuai liang is just that guy. he broke a corrupt foundation and fought against himself and won. sub-zero is him.
