personally i think him dying makes sense
he was always gonna die a pirates death and hed completed his arc (as shown in his speech about belonging and then apologising to ed)
the shows going into its last season if he was gonna be in it theyd have to set up and complete a whole new character arc for him
which would detract time away from the remaining characters with unfinished arcs that will get the focus in s3 like izzy did this season
not least of which being the protagonists of the show who are also late coming out middle aged gay men
