I’m going to post this now, before the shit even hits the fan and then slaps onto the Tumblr walls.
Guild Wars 2 - the base core content - being free to play is not the end of the game. It. Is. Not.
Not unless you guys let it be. We can talk all we want to about how shit the community seems sometimes but I think we all need to understand that unless we, the community, make Free To Play a big bad deal, it’s not going to be. New players are not bad by nature. This community is not going to suddenly turn into a horrible place to be because new people join it.
New people join our GW2 community all the time.
All being free to play means is that you, the current community, can now give the game to friends that have always been a bit on the edge about whether to buy the game or not. Whether they wanted to purchase the game and invest. All free to play means is that new players now access the game even easier than they did before.
I’m going to be honest: ArenaNet have made big changes over the last year that now make a lot of sense. As a veteran player I didn’t see the point in the level restrictions they introduced, but now I do and I don’t mind. Making SMS necessary is another step used to protect us from gold sellers and I am actually, in this instance, confident that ArenaNet have clearly thought very hard about this for over half a year before making the announcements. Maybe even longer.
So please, guys. Don’t even start.
Stop this drama before it begins.
Free to play is not the end of Guild Wars 2 or the GW2 community unless we, the community already here, make it. Unless we actively try to poison this into a bad thing, it’s really not.
ArenaNet have worked hard to make a free to play experience good for new players but also ensure the game stays good for their veteran players too.
So be nice and return the favour; don’t make a big deal out of FTP as if you don’t impact the outcome of this. It’s on us to help make this work, too. Be nice to the new players the same way you’d be nice to a new player that purchased the game.
