Neverending Favorites: Alberich’s Tale Duology (Heralds of Valdemar) by Mercedes Lackey
Honor was never taking the easy way when it was also the wrong one. Never telling a falsehood unless the truth was painful and unnecessary, or a lie was necessary to save others. Never manipulating the truth to serve only yourself. Protecting the weak and helpless; standing fast even when fear made you weak. Keeping your word.
gorgeous fan art.

Vanyel ………. 😭
I am currently in the middle of a Valdemar reread right now. :D I would love to see Herald AUs of Criminal Minds and Leverage.
Hey, if you are anything like me, and shit with Companion Animals like Dragonriders of Pern and Valdemar are your happy place… why have you not written a fluffy nonsense AU fic in which your favorite character gets a companion animal?
I ran a Sparklepony fic fest once that was real small but also so much fun for everyone involved. I wrote a fic where the Tenth Doctor’s companion is that one horse in “The Girl In the Fireplace”, and it’s amazing. I never wrote my Criminal Minds fic where the whole BAU were Heralds, but I still kind of want to, bc fuck that whole concept makes me so happy.
Just give Companions to everyone who could possibly be Chosen. Let your faves stand for Hatching in a universe where dragons and weyrs are common, or let your fave find a Pern-ish dragon egg in a world where they’re not. *Give into your inner 13-year-old girl*, and give your favorite character a sentient animal who loves them unconditionally. You will not regret it.
Choosing Kindness Book Recs
I’m been thinking about stories and the types of things I like to read. I usually think in terms of genre, I love fantasy and space opera and very specific types of romance to name a few. But one type of story I really gravitate to isn’t tied to genre at all (though most of my examples are fantasy). I love stories about genuinly good people doing their best to make the world a better place. Now that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy stories about anti-heroes, rogues or very flawed characters, I do. But there is a very unique flavor to these stories despite wildly different settings so thought I’d make a list of these types of stories. Characters who, when given a choice, choose kindness. I’ll add more as I think of them but please feel free to add on to this list with your own recs.
The Young Wizards series by Diane Duane Book 1: So You Want to Be A Wizard
All the Heralds of Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey Book 1: Arrows of the Queen
The Order of the Air by Melissa Scott and Jo Graham Book 1: Lost Things
Stealing Fire by Jo Graham (I don’t know if this trait carries over to the rest of the Numinous World books, I only just started reading the series, but Lydias is such a great character. There are so many moments were he could be selfish or cruel and the world he lives in would excuse or even encourage it but he chooses kindness instead.)
No so much wanted to be the character but I definitely wanted to be like Raistlin Majere from the Dragonlance series and I have the bloodstone pendants to prove it.
Also seconding the person above, I wanted to be a Herald of Valdemar (though I think I was just starting high school when I read those books).
I also wanted to swim with sharks like Nita and Kit from "So You Want to be a Wizard" or hang out with the Murry family from "A Wrinkle in Time".
all of the poll characters I recognize came long after my middle school years.

@oroborian drew my beloved Sister Lashan / Need for me last year and it's very special. I got it printed and framed it but I'm constantly waffling about where to put it!
they also drew Nyara getting to learn about Fashion. I think she likes it.

A gorgeous commission I got from @spindlewit last year, showing Nyara with Need in the old tower, contemplating her options. I'm still so happy with this.
It's in the style of the art from the Mage Winds covers, though also Need is depicted there as the disturbing presence that Elspeth sees her as having. Nyara's sitting on one of Skif's tunics.
