I can’t publish it yet but I can give you a sneak peak? HAVE A SOULMATE AU
...
Alyssa has always had a little orange dahlia covering her shoulder, fiery petals warm and pretty. She had always been told the bright color stood out nicely against her darker skin.
Nobody knows where the tattoos come from, why they exist, but they have become an important part of life on Earth, so Alyssa never questioned it. Everyone has a tattoo, a flower of a specific species and color, representative of the kind of relationship you will have with your soulmate.
"Orange dahlias represent inner strength, positive change, and standing out from the crowd," Alyssa's mother once explained to her, "your soulmate will be very special, strong, and proud. He will protect you, and support you, as any good man should."
Alyssa's friends have flowers too. Shelby and Kevin met in elementary school, they both have delicate irises imprinted on their skin (hope, wisdom). Kaylee and Nick have pink roses (happiness, joy). Her mother's tattoo was a magnolia branch (perseverance), stretching across her collarbone, milky white petals fading to pink at the base. That tattoo faded away after Alyssa's father left, the flowers in the vase wilted away and died with their love.
Not all soulmates stay together, just like not all relationships last. That's what the bouquet is for. Those secondary flowers detail the smaller aspects of the relationship, the little things that define it, make it different and special. Alyssa wonders what her bouquet will look like. Will it be just as warm and striking as her dahlia? Or will the orange flower on her shoulder be the brightest color in the bunch, sticking out in a cluster of flowers otherwise shrouded by shadows?

Emma Nolan.
It only takes Alyssa a moment to put a face to the name: second grade, a little girl in a spring green dress with curly blonde pigtails, thick-rimmed glasses, and a shy smile. Middle school, slightly-too-big hoodies and tattered converse, trailing behind Kaylee like the world's most cuddly and nonthreatening shadow. Freshman year, a fight breaking out in the entrance hall, no, not a fight, just Kaylee, hurling homophobic insults at her long-time friend. Emma, recently kicked out of her own home, dressed in baggy jeans and a flannel, golden curls newly-chopped to chin-length, had slunk away into the crowd with tears in her eyes, flinching at the snickers of her peers as they all whispered behind her back.
People have always been mean to Emma, but things got so much worse after she got outed. Alyssa tries to avoid being mean to her as much as possible, after all, it's not Emma's fault that she's gay, she just is.
Alyssa makes a list of all the things she knows about Emma, which isn't much, no more than anyone else, anyway.
1. Emma plays the guitar
2. Emma is gay and her parents kicked her out, she lives with her grandmother now.
3. Emma doesn't eat in the cafeteria. Alyssa doesn't know why, or where she goes.
4. Emma avoids her locker like the plague. Last year, a few of the football guys squeezed ketchup packets through the slits in the door and trashed all her stuff.
5. Emma drives a bright blue pickup truck, and always parks in the back lot to avoid the huge crowds that flood the student parking.
6. Emma gives her cousin Greg rides to school in that truck.
7. Emma is a wiz at chemistry, it's the only class she actively participates in.
Okay, so maybe Alyssa knows a bit more about Emma Nolan than most people, but it's just because she's observant. You have to be when you're Alyssa Greene, the girl at the top of the pyramid, the girl who has it all. Well, not everything. Alyssa doesn't have a dad, her's left when she was little. She doesn't have any siblings, though she always wanted at least one, it's lonely being an only child with a single mother who's always working. She doesn't have perfect grades ("4.0 GPA is still second best, you can be better"), the perfect weight ("you've been looking a little chubby sweetheart, have you weighed yourself recently?"), or the perfect hair ("it's just so curly, you can never get it to lay flat, try that new product I got you, maybe it'll smooth things out a bit"). There are many things Alyssa doesn't have, and many things she wants.
One of those things?
Alyssa Greene wants to be Emma Nolan's friend.
So Alyssa settles into her seat beside Emma with a peppy grin already in place; she's going to be nice to this girl even if it kills her.
"Hi, Emma!"
The blonde seems taken aback, her eyes wary while she glances around, as if she's expecting Alyssa to be talking to someone else.
'Okay, maybe the strong approach was too much, she's been alone for so long, I don't wanna scare her.'
She tries for something a little more tentative, "Did you have a good summer break?"
Hesitantly, Emma nods, though she doesn't elaborate. 'Maybe the fact that she didn't spend the summer with her parents is a sore subject? Oh god did I make her sad?! She's staring at you, say something, quick!'
"Are you excited to be partners? I know I am, you're so good at chemistry by the way, which is good for me because I...suck."
As Alyssa laughs at her own misfortune, Emma begins to smile, 'success!'
Alyssa's so busy celebrating in her own head, that she almost misses Emma's reply.
"As long as you don't blow anything up this year, I think we'll be fine."
The corner of Emma's lip quirks up into a smirk, and the sheer dry wit in her voice is startling. 'Is this the same girl?' It must be, but what happened to the shy averting of eyes and bashful smiles? Has Alyssa managed to bypass her outer shell?
Their teacher claps his hands, and the class snaps to attention. As he goes on his spiel about the day's activities Alyssa smiles, they're doing notes today, she's good at taking notes.
As kids start pulling out the needed supplies, a note lands on the table in front of Alyssa. She recognizes Kaylee's familiar scrawl, loopy, and pressed a little too firmly into the paper.
Are you okay? Is Nolan giving you trouble? Do you need help? Istg if she makes a move on you I will make her life a living hell.
Alyssa rolls her eyes, 'as if you don't already Kaylee?' She turns around in her seat and looks back at Kaylee, who's sat next to Carrie with an overly concerned look on her face. Alyssa makes sure she sees it when the note is crumpled up and tossed in the trashcan without a backward look.
She sits down and pulls out a notebook, lining the first empty page she comes across, and begins scribbling down as much information as she can. She sees Emma doing the same out of the corner of her eye, the blonde girl's jaw set firm as her hand moves furiously across the paper, pencil clenched tight between her fingers. Her dedication to note-taking is enough to rival Alyssa's, and the thought almost makes the brunette laugh.
Alyssa glances over to study Emma. Her new lab partner wears her signature pink converse, which look like they're about to fall apart, along with a pair of low-rise jeans and a top that's just a little bit too short, with a flannel left open over top. The small strip of skin left bare reveals part of her tattoo, an orange flower of some kind, fiery petals looking for all the world like a small patch of scales printed against her skin.
Alyssa is reminded briefly of her own tattoo, a flower with a petal pattern similar to the one covering Emma's hip and an orange hue not unlike the one she gazes at now. The thought is dismissed almost as soon as it appears.
'It's just a coincidence, it's not like Emma is my soulmate or something.’
