The Forest: New Neighbours

(Y/N) walked through the grocery store, scanning the aisles for that one particular brand of salad dressing that—
“Ow!”
The collision did not hurt as much, a warm hand had steadied her. It was the shock and embarrassment that elicited the sound from her.
“Oh! I’m so sorry. I wasn’t even looking. Are you alright?” she felt the rumble of his chest as he spoke and that made her realise how close she was to the man.
Wide-eyed and flustered, (Y/N) looked up only to be greeted by a cinnamon-skinned man, mono-lids gazing down at her with concern. Yet there was a strange sense of comfort in his embrace.
“Please tell me I did not hurt you, you are not hurt, right?” his voice was deep, mellifluously so.
She blinked, his eyes were warm and honeyed, yet there seemed to be a tinge of…Something. He was a sight to behold, sure- a striking man with comforting warmth yet somehow tense aura.
There was this deep, nagging voice within her- muffled, but still there, telling her to step back. And she did. But mostly because she had been in the same position for a moment too long.
“Ah, no. I’m good. I was just surprised. Sorry for freaking you out like that.” (Y/N) cleared her throat and replied, trying her best to keep that polite smile pasted over her face.
She was tired. The constant nightmares had worn her out.
The man smiled, and if she had thought he was gorgeous before, he looked stunning with his dimpled smile.
“I’m so sorry, I was quite lost. I’m new here.”
“Oh, I see,” she responded politely
She had concluded that the moment she had laid her eyes on him. The apartment complex held only five buildings- Two one-room apartment buildings, mostly occupied by students like her and the rest of the buildings had families living in them. With only one grocery store and a pharmacy, it was not hard to know if one lived there or not- people would run into each other often, especially in the park just outside the apartment complex.
The park was vast and held a boscage within and a pond as well- perfect for morning jogs and night walks. But she could never develop the courage to venture into the boscage and stuck to the clearing. The incident had left her—
“Hello?” his hand waved in front of her.
She had been daydreaming in the middle of the conversation. “Oh, I’m— I’m so sorry. Eh, Hi, (Y/N)(L/N).”
She felt her cheeks heating up at the surprise blooming on the man’s face. But the rising tension eased as soon as he smiled again, eyes twinkling.
“Kim Namjoon.”
-----
“Like, new in the city or new in this place?” Cindy was curious about the man (Y/N) had met not so long ago.
“New here, he told me that he had been in the city for long enough,” she replied as she washed the vegetables.
“Ah, I see. Oh, did you get my fruit loops?”
“Yes, they’re in the bag. Also, get me the butter please.”
“Yeah sure.”
With that, Cindy walked towards the grocery bags, the sound of her rummaging through them blended with the flowing water from the tap and the general mundane, domestic life around.
“(Y/N), you brought oats, there is no fruit loop.”
“It must be t— wait, oats? I don’t remember picking them up, I know you hate oats.” quickly closed the tap, (Y/N) patted her hands with the kitchen towel before walking towards her roommate.
“Well, this is a packet of oatmeal.” Cindy was already standing with a box in her hand, waving it in the air.
At the sight of the packet, (Y/N) slapped her hand over her forehead.
“Shit! I think the grocery bags got exchanged.”
“With whom?”
“Namjoon, Cindy, is there anything else there?”
“Uh, a lot of meat, eggs- no address though. Let’s just put it back in the store and inform the cashier, they will—”
The doorbell intervened, there was shuffling outside and the women frowned. There was no mail or package expected. Nevertheless, Cindy moved and opened the door.
“Uh- good morning, Miss (Y/N) here?” a familiar deep voice floated in.
“Yes, I’m here.” (Y/N) responded and walked up to the door and opened it wider, revealing Namjoon’s towering form and polite smile.
“I think our bags were swapped somehow, I know the owner personally and he gave me your address, I hope you don’t mind.”
“Oh no, no, I don’t thank you so much, in fact, we were about to return your bag to the store. Wait a minute.” She walked up to the grocery bag and picked it up, while Cindy collected their bag from Namjoon.
“Here, I hope you don’t mind that we had opened it, we didn’t know that it isn't ours.”
“Oh no, that’s completely fine, even I did not realise it until I opened yours.” his smile widened and his dimples deepened. He was truly a gorgeous man.
“Eh, why don’t you come in?”
(Y/N) was surprised and embarrassed, first of all, she forgot to invite him and then, it was her roommate inviting him in. That was new considering how guarded of a person Cindy was.
Sometimes she felt like she was living with a nurturing guard-dog of a person. That was Cindy, her roommate, her best friend, the one who knew everything but never judged or left her side.
With a bit of hesitance, Namjoon settled himself on the living room couch. And while Cindy moved into the kitchen to get everyone something to eat, (Y/N) was left alone with him.
“That’s twice in a day.”
Namjoon laughed at her words, amusement dancing in his eyes and she was glad that she kept her tone as light as possible.
“Why? You aren’t pleased?”
“Oh no, of course, I am, just a bit embarrassed, you had to carry this bag all the way to my apartment.”
“Oh come on, no big deal. It would have been only seconds had the elevator been working. We coincidentally share the same apartment building.”
“Oh, what a surprise.” (Y/N) blinked, still processing the fact. What a Sunday morning to begin with.
“So, you are a student? Or professional?”
“I am a student, studying folklore and legends.”
“Aha, folkloristics that’s new.” Namjoon beamed “I mean, I have never known anyone who has this course. A branch of anthropology I suppose.”
“Yes, it is. And trust me, not all are castles in the air.” she felt a little more at ease with his interest in her course.
“I do believe in the pieces of evidence, trust me, I have never thought all of them to be only legends. There is always some truth behind every legend you know.”
“Yes, and that was what made me so deeply invested in the study, you see, I wanted to have a deeper study. There has to be some scientific explanation behind such bizarre tales.”
“ Not all of them could be science. Do you believe in legends?”
Namjoon tilted his head slightly, one side of his head remained dimmed while the other was exposed to the sunlight filtering in through the opened blinds.
He looked almost unreal, especially with his eyes under the sunlight- his chocolate orbs were lightened and enhanced, and his smooth cinnamon skin seemed like molten hot chocolate. There was something so irresistibly magnetic about him, something about the aura, his eyes, the way he carried himself, it made her want to take a step back, especially when he was not smiling and just gazing at her. His eyes were inviting and—
“Hot coffee everyone, and some fried eggs and bacon strips. Hope that’s okay.” (Y/N) was partially thankful for Cindy’s intervention.
Namjoon’s gaze remained fixed on her before moving to Cindy’s figure and his lips stretched into one of his inviting smiles.
“That is so much more than enough, please sit down, I have already given you enough trouble.”
“No way! It was you who had to take so much trouble, carrying such a heavy bag all the way up. This is the least we could do, please dig in.” Cindy’s friendly smile appeared as she took a seat beside (Y/N).
“So, Namjoon, what do you do?” Cindy questioned
“I am a teacher at Edward’s.”
“Oh, the boarding school, that’s at the outskirts of the city, you must have to drive long.”
“Yes, that can be a problem, but my colleague has no issues driving so, it’s not. Not yet at least”
“You live with your colleague?” it was (Y/N) this time.
“Yes, there were not enough teachers’ residences and quite a few of us had to find some other place.”
“But isn’t it a bit too far away?”
Namjoon just shrugged “That was the only issue we found- this place is quite ideal I must say, especially the park outside the complex, don’t you think so?”
Even though his eyes were on Cindy, (Y/N) felt that the question was somehow directed at her. But she chose to keep silent and just smile and nod.
The park was beautiful, but the boscage covering most of it could never seem appealing to her. It would always remind her of the day when—
“I must leave now, we just shifted and there is so much to do with setting up the home, besides, you both must be tired of the week’s toil, I already took up so much of your time.”
“That is not true,” Cindy reassured.
“Yes, far from it, please let us know if you guys need anything.” (Y/N) added.
Namjoon smiled at her and nodded “Sure, I live two floors below, flat number 8. Thank you for the breakfast again, it was delicious.”
“Yes, Cindy loves to cook, she is great at it.” (Y/N) stated.
“No question on that. Okay now, I should get going, see you.”
“Okay, see you.” Cindy chirped while he made his way out of their apartment.
“What do you think of him?” (Y/N)’s roommate had been curiously friendly with the new neighbour
(Y/N) only shrugged at the question. Namjoon was nice, polite, gentlemanly, well-mannered, there was nothing she could really pinpoint.
“I’m not hungry anymore, you?” diverting the topic seemed to be better for her, she did not wish to linger on him for too long.
“No, neither am I. Movie?” Cindy offered.
“No you can watch, I'm tired, Cindy.”
Cindy nodded understandingly “That’s alright, just take some rest, okay? Try not to stress.”
(Y/N) could only nod half-heartedly.

She was in the woods, it was warm though, sunlight filtering in and warm. (Y/N) could feel the sunlight touching her skin- her bare skin. But she was not cold, far from it.
More than half of her body was dipped in a hot spring, she sighed and released a puff of loud from her mouth. Looking down, she realised that water was up till her shoulders.
There was movement in the otherwise peaceful spring, there were birds chirping, she had spotted a rabbit, a squirrel, but it was not her alone in the place anymore. There was rippling on the surface and it was not long before she felt another body pressed to hers.
So close, too close.

(Y/N) peeled her eyes open. The bedroom was darkened with pulled curtains and shut blinds, but she could still see the afternoon sun glaring outside through the thin gaps. It was a strange dream, but still better than the nightmares that snatched her peace away.
Getting off the bed, she rubbed her eyes. Cindy had already prepared breakfast, she should work on lunch. Dragging herself to the kitchen, she took out the ingredients and began to prepare lunch.
But her mind somehow drifted to the earlier conversation she had with Namjoon. He was a friendly man, for sure. But enigmatic, she realised that even though he had talked for long enough, she and Cindy barely knew anything about him. Not even the name of his roommate.
A strange shiver rose to her spine, but she shrugged it off and focused on preparing lunch. It had been tiring for her lately. The nightmares returned soon after her twenty-first birthday and (Y/N) did not know how to stop it. She straightened up at the thought.
Or maybe, maybe all she needed to do was to get to the roots.
