With finals around the corner, the JSA spent whatever time they weren’t fighting villains and training to protect the town, studying for upcoming exams. For once in his life, Rick Tyler actually cared about the grade he would get instead of doing the bare minimum and accepting whatever he got. 

When he could, the boy spent his time studying at the Chapel residence with his girlfriend and her all knowing AI goggles. Beth could always perk up his mood and with all the stress of possible failure, he desperately needed the joy that came from hearing her voice.

 So that’s where they were left. The two teens studied in Beth’s room. Rick was going over notes at her desk while the girl lay on her bed, goggles placed snugly on her face examining in depth each aspect of her practice questions. 

Rick tried hard to focus on Beth’s colorful note cards that she had lent him for their session but to no avail. His attention was always pulled from the cards every time he heard Beth softly answer her questions. The boy found himself flicking his gaze over to the mirror to steal a glance at his girlfriend in the reflection. A small smile graced his features when he saw her determined expression. 

His eyes trailed back to the study guide the girl had given him, trying his best to engrain the highlighted information into his brain. After a few more minutes of staring blankly at the pieces of paper he rubbed his eyes and moved from his place at the desk and over to Beth on her bed. 

“Hey,” she greeted as she turned over to meet her boyfriend’s gaze.

“Hi,” he mumbled softly as he laid his body next to her own. “How’s it going?” he gestured to the practice quizzes scattered across Beth’s bed.

The girl shifted her body to face him, “I finished my practice questions. You?”

Rick smiled and stroked his thumb over her cheek, “I finished…” he thought for a moment. “Six.”

Beth sat up. “Out of fourty?” she asked, leaning her body back on her hands.

The boy mimicked her movements and sat upright, leaning his body closer to hers than before. “You were being adorable and distracting.” he defended.

“I was behind you.”

“You had a mirror facing you,” he chuckled.

“Do you want my help?” she offered, hooking her legs over his waist. 

“Are you going to help, or are you going to help.” he teased, earning a giggle from Beth before she grabbed his face in her hand and drew him closer, softly planting her lips on his.

He smiled into the kiss and wrapped his arms around her, but before it could turn into anything more she pulled away, leaning her forehead against his. “I mean actually help. I would much rather you hang out with me this summer instead spending all your time in summer school.”

“Me too,” he agreed 

Rick leaned in for one more lingering kiss before moving back and allowing Beth to walk over to the desk, grabbing the note cards and beginning to explain from where Rick had left off. Rick watched his girlfriend in awe, captured by how intelligent and kind she was. 

At that moment he was certain he was the luckiest guy alive. And it was all thanks to Beth Chapel.

Bright rays of sunlight peeked through the curtains of Beth’s room and Rick was awoken. The first thing he noticed was the empty bed. He remembered falling asleep while watching a movie with Beth, her small frame tucked in his arms lulling him into a peaceful state. But as he stirred, the absence of her warmth soon became very clear. 

He groaned, conflicted by both his urges to one: stay in bed for the next century and two: search for his girlfriend. The latter won substantially, Rick knew he wouldn’t be able to fall back to sleep without the comfort of Beth. He haphazardly tossed off the blankets that shielded his body from the cold air in the Chapel house and made his way out of the room. 

Rick was pleased to be met with the smell of food wafting in from the kitchen. He followed the scent and grinned as he saw Beth stacking pancakes onto a ceramic plate looking bright and awake as ever.

“Hey,” he greeted lowly, his voice still laced with traces of sleep.

Beth turned her head and smiled at the sleepy state of her boyfriend. “Good morning!” she greeted sweetly gliding over to him and quickly squeezing her arm around him before going past him and grabbing her coat off the rack. “I made you breakfast.” she supplied.

“I can see. Thank you.” Rick spoke, slowly moving towards the kitchen table.

“I would've stayed in bed longer but Court and Yolanda invited me over for the day so I had to get ready.” she explained. “Don’t worry though. My parents probably won’t be home til later tonight so you can stay as long as you like.” the girl smiled as she got her bag and walked over to Rick. 

She placed a quick peck on his lips before pulling away and heading to the door. She was almost out the door when Rick heard her call out a quick, “I love you. See you later!” before closing the front door behind her.

Rick smiled once more at the adorable nature of his sweet girlfriend before finishing his breakfast and deciding to get himself ready for the day.
