This is my TL;DR version of my thoughts on the final installment of the HTTYD franchise.

not what I usually post but I hope you can forgive me.

I had always interpretted the first two movies through an environmentalist lense. They both carried a strong theme of the coexistence of man and nature.

HTTYD 3 spit in the face of that theme.

Just replace the word "dragons" with "nature" and you'll see what I mean lol.

I’m going to say it.

I don’t think How to Train Your Dragon 3 was good.

Not when you compare it to literally either of the other movies. Certainly not as a conclusion.

I mean, the first movie was about a boy who manages to understand a hostile dragon species and bring peace to two warring factions, which is a parallel for his relationship with his father. The second film was about how sometimes, peace has to be fought for, and Hiccup’s whole identity was in contrast with that—because while his mother ran from conflict and his father leapt at it too eagerly, he had always been the one to stop the fighting. Then he has to learn that the things we love are worth protecting. 

And after he learns that humans and dragons can learn to understand each other and coexist—after he learns that it isn’t enough to run and hide or fight out of fear, but instead you must protect the things you care about—

After those two natural, powerful progressions are clearly worked for in the first two movies—

How to Train Your Dragon 3 comes along and says “‘No actually, sometimes all it takes is one madman whom you defeated with no loss of life to convince you that the things you care about should just crawl into a very pretty hiding hole, because you don’t feel like spending the rest of your life fighting for them.”

My feelings for THW can be summarized in this one video I made last night in a manic frenzy

Also Astrid is a Trophy Wife, Hiccup didn't do actually much to earn her love?

They took, as I like to say, a magical dragon ride together and BOOM she is in love.

A big step was missing you can't go from hating someone guts, and hitting this person too, to like them.

I mean what the heck?

Astrid should have stayed a shield maiden.

Hiccup should have a partner who can relate to him and understand him!

And Light Furry, no thank you we wanted badass female Night Furry!

Just bad writing in the romace departement.

The only important relantenship is the one between Hiccup and Toothless we for me are platonic soul mates.

All the movies work fine and make still sense without Hiccstrid but wouldn't work if you take away the bond that Hiccup and Toothless share.

That's why the third doesn't exist for me, in what world would Hiccup and Toothless leave each other if they fought so long to stay together?

I'm not a fan of H*ccstrid, I never was. I rewatched the first movie and second movie. And I just don't..

The physical abuse Hiccup suffered because of Astrid, who he had a crush on still -boy at that point just move the fuck on she's making you her bitch, makes me uncomfortable. That kiss at the end? Not earned. The relationship, much like Sherman/Penny, is classic Mean Bitch/Dorky Good Guy.

The second? She tried to push him into being chief, when he wasn't ready for it. I read a post that said Astrid was the reason Stoic died. And I agree. She didn't listen, led the others right to Drago like an idiot, wouldn't shut her fucking mouth and because of that, and how the fuck ever Drago FOUND them as the Haddock family was finally back together for the first time in 20 something year's, Stoic died.

The third? It's glossy and gross and yeah.. too much visual grossnes, from the character models to the gross practically glowing Not Night Fury. The Not Light Fury is Astrid's dragonsona (as Stormfly was almost nonexistent), a bitch to Toothless (who had a crush on her), she hit him and attacked Hiccup. But yeah, the stupid resolution aside, the wedding was just.. kinda lame. It wasn't earned. Nope.

I like Astrid.

I like Hiccup.

But please not together.

Hiccup clearly loves her and she loves him. He's a smart person and if he was in an abusive relationship or in one that he's not happy, he could easily get out of it.

First of all I love Astrid as a character. I've grown up with these characters my whole teenage to adult life and I can spot the differences. She's literally the person we should look up to. But they fucking did her dirty by pairing her with Hiccup. I love Hiccup too. They just. Don't fit right if that makes sense.

The reason why this ship doesn't sit right comes entirely from the first movie. Several times she uses physical aggression towards him. Example, twisting his arms , shoving his head into rock and over all causing him extreme pain. But because she kisses him and becomes interested in him its okay? I don't think so. If it were the other way everyone would be all over it. Saying its not okay a boy did it.

Fast forward to the shows in between. Similar things happen where Hiccup is very vocal about Astrid hitting him and asks her 26 times throughout the series for her to stop. She doesn't. Not to mention she threw several hissy fits during times of great peril for Hiccup not paying attention to you guessed it her. Also going on so I will make a separate posts about his animation that shows he's not okay and that the animators behind the series didn't seem okay to it either. 😌

In the TV series we find out Astrid and her family are disgraced in the eyes of Berk even worse than Hiccup being the tribe outcast. She has the great potential but they threw it under the bus in my honest opinion.

The other reason why I don't like the ship is because ASTRID IS THE REASON STOICK DIED! Let that one sink in. If she hadn't flown her mouth off as she did in Drago's scene we find out later in the same scene Hiccup and family were going to go to Berk. Safety in numbers. But because of what Astrid said it caused Drago to strike premature and caused the death of Hiccup's father.

Lastly the animation of Hiccups discomfort around Astrid continues in the third movie. I really don't like the third movie cause they tossed out a lot of the character development for the book ending but that's another story for another time but I'm going to say a lot of people who are in abusive relationships find themselves unable to get out of it safely. But in Hiccup's case he wouldn't be able to do so he's the chief. In viking times if something were to happen as him leaving a relationship like that he and his children would be at risk by other tribe members who already don't see him fit to be chief.

In conclusion that whole ship is just a power grab to help redeem and already disgraced family. While the kids are cute he's got better chemistry with other characters. Not to mention there's animated proof behind it too. So.

I prefer Astrid as shield maiden, but your plot for Hidden World is way better then what we got!

I hate Hiccstrid

That’s right, I said it. Who wants a piece of me?! I just found it annoying. I like both Hiccup and Astrid as characters, but them as a couple?

Yeah, no thanks. Hiccstrid is just annoying, and I think it would’ve been better if Astrid ended up with Eret instead and Hiccup had to find new love in some way in the Hidden World. Maybe he meets another girl who happens to be friends with the Light Fury and fell for her and he and Toothless start questioning wether or not they are ready for romance right now. That could’ve be cool to see. Plus, maybe have the dragons stay and have the message be that you can still be friends even in the most dire situations. Plus, a lot of people have been saying that you are not a true HTTYD fan if you don’t ship Hiccstrid. You know what I say to that?

Just replace country with fandom and that’s what I have to say, since you aren’t a true HTTYD fan if you can’t acknowledge Toothless and just think of him as a motorbike or something since he is very important.

I find it sad that the only thing the majority of the how to train your dragon fandom gives a damn about is hiccup and astrids romance

His reaction with Astrid says a thousand things. She literally twisted his arm behind his back to the point we actually hear cracking. With Eret he gets all giggly and giddy. Because Eret just gently paps his shoulder like a great guy. 

Ya’ll excusing her behavior because she likes him?
