THE HEART OF THE SEA, Bang Chan

All his life, Chan had known the ocean and the ocean only. Knew the way it would shine like crystals underneath the bright sun and knew how the sea would blacken under the rain. He had known the feeling of floating in water better than he knew the feeling of walking on land - his father had also been a sea captain, it was his destiny to feel more comfortable around the ocean than the boring land.

It was why Chan had decided to take the Poseidon’s Call and travel without Minho and his crew to accomplish the pirate’s legend of the hidden island. His father had always believed in it, even attempting to partake in the journey when Chan was just a child, but the ship had been destroyed - his crew, Minho’s father included, all perished while he survived. His father never spoke of what happened in complete detail, the land dwellers all claimed he was crazy whenever he tried, only the old Mrs Jung being the one to listen. But that never warded Chan off from wanting to finish his father’s dream.

His father never spoke of what happened in complete detail, the land dwellers all claimed he was crazy whenever he tried, only the old Mrs Jung being the one to listen. But that never warded Chan off from wanting to finish his father’s dream.

The legend of the sea and its hidden island of treasure was going to be found, whether the answers were what Chan was seeking or not. And he wouldn’t let Minho nor his crew stop him from completing the journey. It was his to take, his right to see his father’s dreams through, and Chan would do it no matter what.

Though, as he watched the Poseidon’s Call crash into the large, jagged rocks above him while he sunk deeper into the salty water. He tried to kick his feet upward, only to have harsh waves crash over his face and send him back into the dark ocean and its hidden horrors.

Chan had never once been terrified of the sea, but as he felt seaweed tangle around his legs and his lungs scream for oxygen, Chan realised that his love for the ocean had betrayed him. He had travelled through enough ocean storms to know how rough the water could get, only he would have his crew to help prevent the ship from crashing. Tonight, he was alone and there was no one to help save him.

He was stupid to have thought a lone man would survive the cursed voyage when not even a crew of the finest pirates to have lived could do so.

The seaweed pulled him down deeper, Chan was sure he could hear the ocean’s malicious laughs at his idiocy, and he breathed out his last bit of oxygen. There was no chance for him to escape, not when his beloved ship was sinking beside him in pieces and the surface was so far away. He could still see the dark clouds and the lightning emitting from them above the water line, oh how Chan wished he could hear that dreaded crack of thunder once more.

But his vision began to go hazy, blackness clouding his eyes as his throat closed from little oxygen. Chan still had his arms swimming upward, desperately hoping to push him free of the dangers from the approaching ocean floor, but he slowly let them fall as he shut his eyes. His once safe space, the love of his pathetic life, brought Chan to his soon-approaching death.

It was rather ironic, how the one place Chan had always felt welcomed him would cause his downfall. Why couldn’t he have gone with his crew, no, his friends, to the tavern every time they came to land? Why did Chan have to be so obsessed with the sea, feel hypnotised by its silent call? Oh, what he would give to have one last chance at seeing his men, his mother - visit his father’s grave.

He could remember Minho and him, when they were children on the original Poseidon’s Call, discussing the desperate wishes of a dying man. They had both just watched their fathers send a man overboard for attempting to rob their treasures, listened to how he had begged for forgiveness, to see his wife once more. It was then they had both promised one another to never let them die with such wishes, if they were going to die pleading for something it would be gold.

Chan would laugh at how ignorant he had been as a child. Even if he had been the richest man in the world, the happiest man, Chan knew he would always wish for one more. Whether it be one more day, one more hug - one more chance to see his loved ones.

Something brushed past his hand, fast, and Chan’s eyes opened in surprise. And fear, if he was being honest with himself. It was hard for him to see anything beyond the dark sea and the clouding blackness in his vision.

The saltwater stung his eyes, but Chan fought the urge to tightly close them, fought the crying of his lungs, and kept watching for whatever fish swam past him. It nudged his hand again, nails against his skin almost poking him, before swimming away and Chan was pushed slightly back by the strength of the water movement.

The water pushed him upward slightly, fighting against the seaweed, and then Chan felt the tightness around his ankles loosen. The seaweed was cut - from the claws he had felt, Chan assumed it was more likely ripped - and Chan’s legs were free to swim away. Though he lacked the energy, there was no point in him trying to swim free when his brain was so blurry and could barely see anything in front of him.

Clawed nails poked at his skin once again, only at his shoulder this time, and Chan looked toward where he assumed the creature was. He could barely see what it was, barely see anything, but Chan saw its eyes. Bright, glowing eyes captured him and made him fall frozen - despite how badly he wished to move.

Then, soft lips pressed against his, making his eyes fall shut softly as the pain in his lungs lessened. He should have been terrified, should have tried to swim away, but instead, all Chan wanted to do was kiss back and let his lips dance against the creature’s perfect pair.

But, the lips left his all too soon, and Chan shook his hazy mind of such thoughts, barely even acknowledging how much easier he felt. How he felt like he was floating safely in the sea, like he always did, and how his lungs easily breathed with the salt water flooding them.

Humming cut through the water, sounding as though their hypnotic tune had been whispered right into his ears, and Chan’s still-closed eyes felt like they had been tied shut. His limbs went heavy, his breathing shallowed, and Chan felt himself slump in the water - darkness taking over his just-cleared mind.
