i'll try!
something about his devotion to god and how he really truly believed in what he did. and how the council used that to manipulate him into doing their bidding. Gabriel is flawed for sure and i don't mean to downplay anything that he did, but i think he's a good guy at heart and i feel like maybe things wouldn't have played out the same if the council weren't pulling the strings. like, to the council and (for a while) to himself he was just a tool used to carry out the "will of god", not a person. he only had whatever the council instilled in him, and not to mention, as we see after his loss to V1, the council arent afraid to give out harsh punishment if he goes against them.
so... something about how he did everything he was supposed to, but he makes one mistake (or at least, what the council perceive to be a mistake, he couldn't help that he physically could not stand to fight anymore) and the council don't hesitate to leave him for dead. and the anger and confusion that follows until his second meeting w/ V1. and then the catharsis that comes from having a real challenge for the first time, and coming to understand that his faith was misplaced; realizing that god is gone, so there is no more "god's will", and he's his own person. how bitter and angry he is but how alive it makes him feel.
i dunno! i know how disjointed all of this is but maybe you can tell what i'm getting at. just really hits close to home. i'm sane i'm normal and i love him dearly.
i also have thoughts about gabriel and religious trauma but i dont know what to say about that one much either LOL
