“This little girl,” Bobby said, scooping Amelia out of Tommy’s arms, “will be safe with me for a while.”

Bobby blew a raspberry against her stomach and she laughed, a soft giggle that made Tommy’s throat tight, relieved to hear her happy. He needed sleep, desperately, but he couldn't leave her with Bobby: what if Tommy missed something? More laughter or an especially cute smile—or she might get hungry—

“When you hold her bottle…there’s a way she likes…” Shoot. Tommy couldn’t remember. His thoughts and his mouth were like when the subtitles of a movie were off and the text on the screen didn’t line but with the words being said. But he knew it was important. Bobby needed to know.

“Horizontal,” Evan mumbled, his eyes closed, leaning most of his weight against Tommy's side. “Otherwise it’s bad news.”

Tommy nodded. Of course. That was it. “She loves to burp.”

“So loud,” Evan yawned.

Bobby shot him and Tommy an amused look and Amelia made a complicated burbling noise, like they were both making fun of them.

“I think I got this, guys,” Bobby said. “She’s gonna be fine. It's bedtime.”

“But being gassy is serious,” Tommy tried, only for Bobby to steer him and Evan towards the stairs.

“Go to bed.”
