Dean isn’t surprised that he and Cas are the only ones left at the kitchen table. No matter what happens, they always seem to find themselves here: alone together, hunched over twin bottles of El Sol, talking in low voices and pretending their knees don’t brush under the table. Mom had stayed for a while—enough to down a glass of blue label before making her excuses and turning in. Sam and Jack hadn’t been far behind.

Dean gets it; he probably could’ve come up with some bullshit excuse and headed to bed, too… but there’s something about sitting here with Cas that’s slow and indulgent in a way a lot of his life isn’t. So he sips his beer, and he pretends he’s not playing footsie, and, after he’s a bottle down and halfway into his next, he looks at Cas and says: “So I talked to my dad.”
