Love in Suburbia | a WIP re-intro.

What is this?: The first novel in a trilogy following the lives of six teens after they experience a traumatic night at a house party.

Genre: Literary Fiction + Mystery with elements of Urban Fantasy.

Status: Being Beta-ed with hopes of querying by the end of this year!

Setting: Veora, a fictional town in Massachusetts, USA. 1991.

Content Warnings: discussions of sexual assault, discussions of suicide, drug use, alcohol use, homophobia, racism, classism, terminal illness, murder.

Synopsis: Two senators’ kids walk into a house party. One of them gets dragged out, unconscious, and wakes up in a stranger’s bed the next morning. The other wakes up in her own with a hangover. Their normal morning-after routines.

Danny just wants to forget about that night but the boy who saved his life can’t leave his mind. Especially when he’s been the only person who’s made him feel anything since his mother’s death. When news of Danny’s drugging comes to light, Eva puts it upon herself to find out what exactly happened that night.

Because she cares about him, right? It’s not because of the overwhelming guilt, or so she tells herself. Over and over and over again.

Here it is again. My pet project, my child. The thing keeping me alive both metaphorically and literally.

Have had a bit of a journey with this one. Four years in the making and seven full rewritten drafts (with one on the way), but I think we’re finally getting somewhere. This bad boy is all about the healing power of connection. The human experience is rough and going through it alone can be deadly. 

So why follow this project? Would you like to see a love story between two boys of color that isn’t built hot and fast but instead simmering and uncertain? How about a story following a girl of color as she takes her agency into her own hands for the love of her friends? Would you like to see a story with a magic system that isn’t in your face and instead enriches the narrative from the side-lines? This one may be for you.

Anyway here are the main characters:

Daniel Aberdeen - 17. He/Him. POV Narrator. The senator’s son. Doesn’t know how to apologize quite yet. Fell in love at too young an age. Needs to go to therapy.

Eva Parron - 17. She/Her. POV Narrator. The other senator’s daughter. Has self-esteem issues. Fiercely loyal to her friends. Needs to go to therapy.

Wren St. Claire - 18. She/Her. Daniel’s pretend girlfriend and Eva’s childhood friend. Your local good Christian girl. Prefers books and poems to people. Cleverly cutthroat. Needs to go to therapy.

Chandler Parker - 16. He/Him. Eva’s boyfriend and Daniel’s childhood friend. The starving artist. Has a degenerative lung condition. Chooses to repress his emotions. Needs to go to therapy.

Jude Valentine - 16. He/him. The boy who saved Danny’s life. An enigma. Has wanderlust flowing through his veins. Keeping a big secret but wants to tell the world. Needs to go to therapy.

Violet Valentine - 17. She/Her. Jude’s sister. The Night Wolf. Not a fan of politicians’ kids. Has a killer sense of fashion. Needs to go to therapy.

Updates on this project may be sporadic and unorthodox but that’s just the nature of being a writer, isn’t it?
