This is the story of how the Icewings rediscover their ancestral homeland.
The Breath of Evil has shaken Pyrrhia. Most of the Jade Winglet and the Silkwings are hiding in the Ice Kingdom, because plants don’t do well in the cold. Poring over ancient Icewing prehistory, someone discovers a mention of a “Gift of Magic,” and of arriving in Pyrrhia from the north. They present these findings to Queen Snowfall, who arranges a mission to the north. The dragons who go are Moon, Cricket, Turtle, Winter, Peril, and Queen Snowfall.
They find ruined buildings of ice, until they reach the city at the absolute true North Pole. That city is very well preserved, because, as Peril finds out, it is magically reinforced against fire and self-repairing, with the Gift of Preservation. Its enormous wall has many statues of Icewings, which animate and try to kill the non-Icewings. They find the throne, which is actually more like a cat bed than a normal throne, on top of a massive tower in the center of the city, emitting the Aurora Borealis. When Snowfall sits on it, she discovers she can see everywhere the lights shine, and expresses a desire for her throne to be like it. They find the vault, with several other Gifts as well as the Gift of Magic, a carved narwhal tusk that allows anyone to do anything an animus can. They use it to undo the mass animus depowering, and also turn Turtle and Snowfall into animuses. Then they decide that it is too powerful, due to its complete lack of limits on who can use it for what, and leave it hidden in the city. Then Moon asks to see the city’s library, where all the scrolls are preserved. Snowfall realizes that she can choose between gifting a stronger Ice Cliff, or gaining the magical throne from the palace. The choice is yours, as is what the rest of the story is.
