I Tried My Best To Answer This But Forgive Me Due To Me Having Many Thoughts About This Subject - Tumblr Posts
https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/52853712#1 found a great comic book with Whis and Beerus. It looks like angels are really "evil" and use destroyers
Love, love this question. First of all, I appreciate you Anon for sharing the comic, you are right, it’s a great comic. The art is beautiful, expressive and tells an innovative idea in 7 pages. Anyone who do stumble on this, please check out this comic because it’s a really good and the artist also do more Whis/Beerus art work if interested, and I will spoil the comic throughout this post to explain why this comic is not necessary showing an example of an angel (Whis) using an destroyer (Beerus) which is my interpretation of this comic, and what does it mean for angels to be or already are “evil” or evil in general.
Beerus, God of Destruction Beerus, Dragon Ball / ウイスがなんかヤンデレな漫画 - pixiv
I think what had occurred is a use of the Yandere trope used on Whis’ characterisation making him active in his story in this comic and swaying the narrative by his actions, subtle enough for Beerus not to be suspicious to suspect Whis of this so that Whis could get away with this. Whis is making sure that Beerus returns to him, at his side, at his grasp, at his hold, as Whis always wanted.
I will split this question into two, the Yandere Whis interpretation (to explain this example’s idea) and the “evil” question (using the comic example to answer that question).
Yandere Whis Interpretation
I could see this as psychological horror, obsession and a subject of unrequited love from Whis’ end which are the main components of a Yandere type story, under a dark romance-horror genre. Whis’ personal desire to be close to Beerus, being physically close to him and being the only person as Beerus’ companion, and no one else either alive or dead.
A Yandere is someone who can be sweet, loving and submissive to someone they love but can turn violent and very obsessive to ensure the one they love stays with them which is usually one person, in this case it’s Whis who is obsessed with Beerus.
What happens in the comic? In the comic, after a huge incident leaving a lady (Luz) severely injured and about to die, she reached Beerus to save her from her flight, Beerus extended his arm and was about to do what she says. But Beerus was stopped by Whis, horrified by Whis’ almost sadistic expression as Whis put his hand on Beerus’ head, erasing his memory of Luz and the planet he is on. When travelling in space, Beerus had trouble recalling “something” thanks to Whis’ memory erasing powers, Whis held Beerus close from behind at the moment of his destroyer’s vulnerability.
Evidence of the Yandere Interpretation: Introduction
The relationship between Beerus and Luz is not explicitly mentioned but regardless if they were lovers, close friends or has an interesting dynamic, it is less about the label of the relationship but the closeness and intimacy the two had that Whis cared enough to intervene with a smirk, now he is taking an active role throughout the comic to get what he wanted - Beerus.
Evidence of the Yandere Interpretation: Language from Beerus and Luz’s dialogue
The language of the dialogue between the two is the main evidence of their apparent closeness. Luz does not refer to Beerus as Beerus-sama or Lord Beerus in respect to his status, as all subjects/citizens of Universe 7 should address the destroyer as such, including Whis as Beerus’ attendant. Instead, due to her unable to sound the ン mora at the end due to her breathless, injured speech, she likely referred to him as Beerus-san, a still formal way to address someone but there is more closeness that suggests this is more than a lord-subject relationship. Also who can call Beerus as Beerus-san? I can’t think of one. Plus Beerus calls her before his memory is wiped by her personal name, another indication of closeness Whis did not like.
Evidence of the Yandere Interpretation: The Last Page
At the last page of Whis, a definite hint of selfishness from Whis that is more of his joy of obtaining Beerus back at his side, as if to say “sure you can call whatever pet name to Lord Beerus but at the end, he comes back to me, he always will. You just borrowed him temporarily from me.” Ah, what an intense look at the end, a smirk derived in defeating someone out of jealousy. This shows Whis being a Yandere as indirectly denied Luz’s closure with Beerus before she died and Whis comforted Beerus with warmth, a contrast to his earlier actions and mood.
Whis’ behaviour
What is clever is that Whis’ mannerisms are involved in this characterisation, he got rid of Luz without getting his hands dirty or violence He is able to get rid of her in style without anything trailing back to him. Cold blooded yet perfectly neutral just like his role as a neutral, guide angel. Beerus indirectly did what Whis wanted, to destroy the woman and her planet permanently. Whis' influence on Beerus is quite significant and Whis knows this and plays this to his advantage. Beerus will not suspect Whis doing foulplay because of no evidence that leads to Whis and to Beerus, it is “seemly” unlike him and not realising his memories were wiped away.
He sees Whis as an model angel he is neutral and not actively intervening in mortal manners unless ordered by a destroyer, that he didn’t intervene when Merus fought with Moro and let Merus lose his angel status despite both Whis and Merus being brothers and Grand Priest would not be pleased if Merus is well dead. Likely what happened was Whis let Beerus get close to Luz to show he is a model angel who follows his destroyer’s order, the submissive aspect of a Yandere and when the time has come, Whis had prevented her death being a permanent mark on Beerus so he erased her existence from Beerus’ mind and Beerus erased her from existence.
The irony is that although Whis did succeed in getting Beerus back to him, he still says Beerus-sama, even holding him in a friendly-intimate way, there is still a professional distance due to their roles. Unlike Luz who can drop honorifics addressing Beerus, Whis can’t. Whis, who is loyal to his master, but practises their selfish desires e.g love within and justification of their duty so there is almost no difference between their actions of duty and their own desires even that extends to killing their master’s love if needed/necessary. Whis will repress his true feelings and keep it a secret, but always to make sure the kitty returns to him after straying.
Does this example answer the question: Are angels “evil?”
The short answer is no.
This comic is about Whis, and what we see in other angels, they are not exactly the same, they have different personalities (e.g. compare Whis with Vados). This type of action Whis had done it before, we can’t infer if the other angels had done this or done something worse with or without their destroyer’s knowledge. What Whis did was self-serving and cruel and example of moral evil, but considering Whis is an angel and trained to be neutral in all matters and to oblige to the authority which is Grand Zeno, Daishinkan and their destroyer, and their role is ensure their destroyer is doing their duty right, there is a small justification of what Whis did, it’s for his duty and his loyalty to Beerus remains (and not broken). Luz was about to die anyway, and with the death of a close one or a loved one, it can leave a permanent mark on someone. Whis knows about Beerus and don’t want Beerus to think about her during his grief, mourning to the point it might delay in his duty and Beerus does not have any healing powers so her dying up close on Beerus’ arms, that is remembered more than hakai a random planet Beerus felt undeserving for that to live. Though Whis was selfish in his intentions, he did care about Beerus when comforting him and distracting his mind, like a selfish saviour, making his lord happy by only him. So he’s a neutral evil.
In a way, yes, Whis and to some extent, the other angels could use the destroyer to some limited extent if an angel’s influence on the destroyer is low like anime Mojito with anime Sidra. But even the angel’s influence on the destroyer is high like Marcarita and Martinu who won’t hide their thoughts or desires like Whis and perhaps likely make that clear to their destroyers and supreme kais, them using the destroyers are still low, they can guide but not dictate the destroyers, if the angels can dictate then the Tournament of Power would not likely exist considering the mortal level would be much higher.
Can the angels being “evil”? It can be possible and I want to see it work but it is limited what they can do is evil because of their role restrictions and angelic law. I might make a separate post on a possible scenario of "evil" angels Thank you anon for this ask, I know it is been a long time this was in the inbox, I hope you find this after many days.
