Been thinking about romance in the Fairies universe (since apparently Valentine’s Day is unavoidable on Tumblr) and I one thing I love is that so very few couples are actually canon. As in, I think the only full canon couple we’ve been given is Milarion (and it seems like we’ve kind of collectively decided to ignore that one), otherwise it’s just smaller things like Tinkerence being a Ross/Rachel situation, Jerome/Thistle, Rosetta and her various romantic endeavours, Vidia/Kyto, Scribble making a move on Nyx, and a lot of implied but never really fleshed out things.
And I love that because it gives us so many opportunities to make our own ships, but perhaps even more because it allows to keep certain interactions as purely platonic. Like Rani and Ronan can be romantic, but their interactions can also be read as those of caring friends. And likewise with Clank and Bobble, Prilla and Vidia, Fairy Gary and Fairy Mary, and whatever couple we can think of. We can make their relationships anything we want, even change them depending on what mood we’re in, and it doesn’t directly contradict canon.
Like I love shipping as much as anyone else. But honestly I love a good friendship even more than that. And I love that we have the freedom to choose either for any character we want.
