Even those who weren’t mining would be at a greatly increased risk of lung cancers, if not miner’s lung itself. There is all but no clean air in 12, as Katniss said herself. And that’s not even touching what childbirth would be like.
I’ve said for a while that miners (of course, among other workers) are essentially enslaved when they can’t move and work for the same person/organisation their whole life to barely make enough to live on. This is, of course, especially prevalent in 12, though it’s very telling about the real life conditions of miners.
thinking about how many miners succumb to black lung in district 12 and then realizing most of them never lived long enough for it to matter
