Jack and Rein have this thing that they came up with together.

It’s called “Penny for your THAW-ts,” and it only really works in summer or by a fire.

It’s simple. When someone looks like they have something on their mind, one of them will grab an ice cube, set it down next to the person and ask, “Penny for your thaw-ts?” The plan is to let the other person talk until the ice cube melts or, if they don’t want to talk, they can sit together until the ice cube has melted.

Really, it only works in a fictional setting because an ice cube can take a while to melt. But the goal is to get the other person on such a roll of talking that they won’t notice when the ice cube has melted— or to give the person a window into how much longer they “have” to talk about their issue.

There’s also the third option of respectfully leaving them alone if they ask... neither of them follow that rule very well.
