she gets it. the brotherhood hovering above the commonwealth is far from the one she grew up in. even two years later, june finds herself missing it sometimes: the hum of the purifier, the sounds of shuffling papers; she even misses the complaints of her fellow scribes about being overworked.

then, she remembers what they stand for now, their purpose lost shortly after sarah lyons's passing.

" i don't think many of us escaped the brotherhood without some regrets about what we've done, " she says softly. " but what use is a penance that only makes sure you can't give your best to the men that rely on you now? "

for all their petty spatting, she sees some of eliana in jamie and vice versa. silly, self-sacrificing leaders.

She Gets It. The Brotherhood Hovering Above The Commonwealth Is Far From The One She Grew Up In. Even

" it's a wonderful thing you've helped build here. this is ... what i always dreamed the brotherhood would do. especially once the tidal basin had clean water. " she folds her hands in her lap, brow creasing. " so much wasted potential. "

she breathes out a sigh. " but, it's good to see that it's possible somewhere. "

❝ how have you been sleeping ? ❞ - from june!

He almost has to hold back a chuckle. Almost. A SERIOUS demeanor was something he was rather rigid about when it came to ensuring he wasn't ever breaking his persona. He was an enforcer, and it was pertinent he maintained that persona the best he could. When she speaks he draws in a quiet breath, shaking his head before replying.

"Unfortunately, I don't quite have such a luxury. The state of the Commonwealth is a bit fickle, and the last thing I would want is to fall asleep on the job."

His memory of nights spent practically from sundown to sun-up in his office running through any sort of work he could do is vivid and fresh in his mind as he turns his attention.

"Apologies, I'm...still somewhat fresh of my defection."

@nuclearbinds Said:

It's a private detail. One that she and Eliana's whole little gang of renegades were aware of ( it was impossible to hide it considering they all KNEW him, but they'd for the most part honored his request of keeping it to themselves ).

"I think perhaps I'm due for some self inflicted penance. The brotherhood saw me do some...less than noble things and I will be nothing if I do not meet my end as a noble man trying to undo the wrongs I supported and committed myself."

 So Much For The Big, Bad Lone Wanderer, She Says, Eyes Glimmering With Amusement. She Pulls Her Hand

❝ so much for the big, bad lone wanderer, ❞ she says, eyes glimmering with amusement. she pulls her hand away from the scratch, frowning as fresh blood rises sluggishly at the deepest parts of the cut. more gingerly this time, june presses the alcohol-soaked cloth against it. ❝ give me a chance to stop the bleeding. i don't want to use more gauze than we have to, and you don't want bacteria in your bloodstream. ❞

@nuclearbinds Sent: [ Patch ] - Sender Carefully Patches One Of Receiver's Wounds // June -> Charlie

Teeth grit, Charlie was trying her best to sit still amidst June patching up a nasty scratch on her forearm, attention focused elsewhere. It wasn’t the sight of the wound or the blood that bothered her — she had been used to helping her dad and Jonas back in the Vault’s clinic and although there was never anything seriously bad, the girl often patched up the others whenever they came in — but rather the ache in her arm. “Ow.” She drew a sharp breath, nearly moving away out of instinct. “Are you almost done there?”

❝ all in a day's work, though, right? ❞ she says, forcing an exhausted smile. she takes a moment to lean against a barely standing fencepost, checking her weight against it before she relaxes completely. ❝ i haven't had a day like this in ages. in a way, it's kind of nice, being there for people again. ❞

june's smile brightens, more genuine this time as she gains a second ( or is it a third or fourth? ) wind. her hands fall against her thighs as she straightens back up. ❝ i think we've pretty well cleared this place, though. bye-bye raiders! ❞

she juts a thumb at a house down the street. ❝ i saw a few books and things i want to take back with us before the elements get them entirely. mind helping me carry them? ❞

❝ who said they're ending up anywhere near the colonel's little library? ❞ she scoffs, giving a flippant toss of her hair. ❝ actually, i've been dying to get my hands on some of his classics. if we find something good, he might finally trade me — and bookworm is probably an understatement. ❞

 Who Said They're Ending Up Anywhere Near The Colonel's Little Library? She Scoffs, Giving A Flippant

among the brotherhood, it was rare to find those with more academic interests, outside of her fellow stuffy scribes. even then, they wanted manuals, textbooks, while she wanted stories, the bits of the old world that couldn't be captured in tech.

she smiles at the toy. to say it brings her joy to be among people who see the value in the little things would be an understatement. the brotherhood wanted to rebuild the world in its image; the renegades simply tried to hold the wastes together by a thread, but the minutemen want a better future, and, for the first time, they might actually be able to attain it.

❝ it's nice to have kids around, ❞ she says, strolling back in the direction of the house she suspects hides the metaphorical key to jamie's copy of hamlet. ❝ there weren't many during my time in the brotherhood. actually, the only one would have been elder maxson himself. ❞

She scoffs a little, finally lowering her weapon despite the fact that she's going to remain alert. It was nice to have someone who she could reasonably rely on who ALSO had charisma. She liked Camden & Colonel Lawson, but they were nothing if not stiff as boards.

And heaven knew she couldn't travel with her brother and remain rational, suffice it to say she's happy to have a travel companion she can ACTUALLY chat with even when they're off the 'clock' so to speak.

"Oh yeah, I'm sure Colonel Lawson's gonna love that. Minutemen's favorite book worm has a pension for keeping a personal library."

She offers a smile, one hand resting on her hip right above where her pistol is holstered before she turns back to June, crouching down and picking up a small trinket from the charred ground below.

"Huh, look at this, little toy robot. Sure one of the kids back at Sanctuary would appreciate this."

She Scoffs A Little, Finally Lowering Her Weapon Despite The Fact That She's Going To Remain Alert. It

A pause.

"You much of a book worm?"
