This is supposed to be the happiest day of your life; so why is there a debilitating weight in your chest, and the desperate need to look over at the guest table in front of you?
It feels like there’s a dark, solid mass nestled in your rib cage, almost where your heart should be. Slowly consuming you from the inside out, it poisons your mind with guilt and regret. A pair of eyes burn holes into the side of your head as you stare at the wait staff hanging around the kitchen area. You have no real interest in them, they’re just waiting for all the guests to be seated and so they can serve dinner within the hour.
Dragging your line of sight away from the kitchen wasn’t as difficult as it should be — instead, what was painful, was the act of trying not to look ahead of you at the piercing gaze. Purposely curving your vision down to your lap, you look to your other side.
The sludge that consumed your chest backs off immediately once you look at Yuuji, shoulders relaxing from the tense position you hadn’t noticed you were in. You let out a wistful sigh of relief, feeling like you can breathe again, and Yuuji turns to look at you. A smile breaks out across his face, wide to the point his cheeks close his eyes.
That’s your husband. Your brand new husband sat next to you at your wedding reception. The man you’d just officially wed in front of close friends and family.
He leans in for a kiss and it’s sweeter than all the previous ones. It’s all in your head, but since you read each other your vows and exchanged rings, his kisses have tasted a little different.
You giggle when Yuuji tries to deepen the kiss; to him it feels like the dining hall is empty, while you still feel invisible lasers tearing through your skull with a vengeance.
“Stop.” It was a light scolding and as you try to pull away, Yuuji cradles your jaw to keep kissing you. “Everyone’s still here. You’ll get plenty of that later tonight.”
Yuuji almost pouts but he knows you’re right, slumping back in his seat and taking your hand in his. “Okay okay,” He grins, “But tonight you’re not going anywhere.”
His hand is warm in yours, a familiar comfort that you hope you’ll never tire of. Just like that cheeky grin he always has or the laid back attitude about everything. Throughout the process of planning this wedding Yuuji has been your rock, a calming feature to rest against and clear your mind when things become too much.
Speaking of things…
The burning became too much, a nagging in the back of your mind that threatens to tear you apart. It feeds the slog in your chest, encourages it to grow bigger and bigger until you can’t take it anymore. You finally face what you’d been avoiding for a record breaking five minutes since you arrived at the ceremony this morning.
Sukuna was already looking at you when you gave in, eyes locking and that weight in your chest shrinks once again. Unlike Yuuji, you can’t bring yourself to smile but your heart flutters all the same when looking at his brother.
Of course he was going to be here to celebrate his little brothers wedding, watching the person he used to fuck casually — before you met Yuuji — walk down the aisle. When you started dating and recognised Sukuna again, you knew it would be nothing but trouble — and it was.
There’s only been a handful of moments in the years you’d been dating Yuuji that you found yourself in the claws of such a beast once again. It was like a game between you and normally you’re strong and resilient, however, Sukuna doesn’t ever play fair to get what he wants. He would conveniently show just enough comfort when you had a fight with Yuuji, when your boyfriend was out of town and your bed was cold. The way he’s been giving you eyes all day has been foul, a new low in this cat and mouse game you play.
You swallow the lump in your throat, something that isn’t the black goo consuming your heart. It feels just the same though; spreading guilt and the memories of Sukuna’s hands on your skin into your mind. If you let it, the feeling just might consume you.

(if you didn't read the comment) here is where you vote for the next chapter! pick what you would do next and the next chapter will be posted after the poll has finished
