Newt has been locked up for months, and Jake Pentecost is becoming desperate, because they're making no progress with getting info out of Newt. Since the events of the film, the real Newt hasn't resurfaced once, and everyone is convinced that he's just an empty husk now.
When Hermann discovers that they're going to start torturing Newt as a last resort, he manages to get a final visit with him and makes a desperate last plea to Newt to do something, anything, terrified tears in his eyes.
(i tried drawing it but it looks kinda shit and i gave up halfway, oh well)

Newt has no reaction, and Hermann gets dragged out of Newt's cell.
But unbeknownst to anyone, Newt did actually hear Hermann, and it gives then the strength try something new...
And that is all I'll say for now! Sorry for not actually answering your only question yet, but if I manage, I'd like to try and draw what happens, hope you're ok with waiting some more :]

I was messing around, not super sure how colourful I want him to be. Next time I'll look up some actual animals (maybe crustaceans and corals?) as reference

How intelligent is Kaiju!Newt? Is he as smart as a human, or more like an animal? Can he talk?
Newt is as smart as he was when human, but his new body does come with some more feral instincts, which are as much of an advantage as they are a hassle, especially when he first "wakes up".
He can't talk (his big chompers aren't really meant for that), which is an absolute nightmare for Newt of course. Thankfully a temporary solution to communicate has been found, imperfect as it may be. But don't worry, Hermann will soon throw caution to the wind and accidentally find a better way for them to "talk"...
