2k12 Leo x Reader ~ Dojo Training

you really weren't an aggressive person. fighting wasn't something you thought about pursuing or needing to learn, even after befriending a whole group of ninjas. but in these circumstances, it seemed necessary, and you were just hoping to put Leo's mind at ease.
as you arrived at the lair, the smell of pizza wafted to the pair of turtles who were casually hanging out with one of your friends, April. Mikey, the usually excitable and energetic one, was first to greet you and kindly took the warm boxes from your hands. Donnie was next, addressing you with a wave, but more interested in the food you had brought with you.
you were pretty used to this group of boys by now, and it was almost tradition for you to bring a treat with you every time you visited them.
instead of sticking around and chatting with anyone, you were hasty to make your way to the dojo, but not before saying a quick hello to April.
as soon as you opened the door to the dojo, you were met with the sight of Leo sitting and quietly meditating. you were sure he had heard you arrive, as the commotion Mikey made was hard to ignore. but either way, you set your things down and joined him on the floor, sitting across from him and smiling to yourself as you tried your hand at meditation.
it wasn't long before Leo opened his eyes, and to be met with the sight of you was something he was always grateful for. you, in one piece, sitting in front of him and looking so peaceful. he didn't want this moment to end, but he let it, clearing his throat and greeting you sweetly as you opened your eyes.
"hi y/n," he smiles.
"hi Leo," you reply, matching him with your own grin.
there is a minute of small talk, the two of you exchanging stories about the past couple of days, until he finally asks the question you've been waiting for.
"ok well, are you ready to start?" he says as he stands up, offering you a hand.
"i am!" enthusiastically you respond, taking his hand and standing as well.
it's, not surprisingly, awkward at first. you don't really know what you're doing, and Leo isn't fully confident in his ability to teach. but it smoothes out, and as you learn the very basics of how to throw a good punch, you find yourself really enjoying your time. you aren't anywhere near his level, but you're getting the hang of it.
as you aim a solid throw at Leo's jaw, just as he taught you, he catches your hand and the two of you pause for a second, holding one another's gaze, before he quickly says, "that was good! really good." and you laugh.
unbeknownst to you, Leo is feeling the same way, eventually getting comfortable and finding that he was having fun as well. he hopes that this would make up for all of the trouble you've gone through by just knowing of his existence. and he hopes that he's impressing you as least a little bit.
even though you were dealing out some solid hits, your stance still needed to be improved upon, and you were well aware of that. despite your best efforts, you couldn't seem to get it quite right.
eventually Leo put away his nervousness to say, "you're doing amazing, but could i help you with your stance?"
and you agreed, having to put away your own shyness as he closed the gap between you two. it took only a few strides and then he was directly in front of you. he took one arm in each hand and guided them to a good defensive position, but not without a few glances at your face, and a couple times where your eyes met and quickly flicked away. and with that, your stance was greatly improved. it did take Leo a few seconds to snap out of the gaze he held on you, but once he did, you continued sparring.
once you had landed a few more good punches, Leo deemed you ready to move on to the other things he wanted to show you. "you're doing really good, y/n," he smiles, and continues, "would you like to do something else? i could teach you how to block?"
you were happy to do anything at this point. you kept reminding yourself that although you weren't confident in your ability to fight still, this was going to make Leo feel better, and that's all you wanted. at the very least his brothers wouldn't have to hear about how worried he was anymore.
so you continued following his instructions, learning to use your hands and forearms to keep yourself from being hit. you could tell he was holding back, but you were thankful he was. having witnessed him fight, especially how he fought for you, was definitely not something you wanted to go up against.
again he had to fix your stance, and again there were many quick glances that were just as quick to dissolve. you couldn't tell if your heart was racing from the proximity or from the adrenaline of being so active.
"i think i'm getting the hang of it," you said, rather unconfidently, betraying the actual meaning behind your words.
"you definitely are, especially for not having fought before," Leo reassured you, offering a smile to support you.
and it did assure you, so you let out a chuckle accompanied with, "thanks," and continued to defeat the punching bag he had set up in front of you. as you landed hit after hit, you kept thinking back to when he had defended you from an actual threat, and tried to mimic what you had observed.
it was a simple mistake. you had just seen the turtles in your school as you were walking by and decided to say hi. you didn't mean to get caught in the crossfire of a full-blown fight, but there you were, with a minor concussion from being blown back by the blast wave of an explosion.
and of course Leo put it all on himself. he felt awful, and he wouldn't stop talking about it either. to anyone but you. you eventually heard of it, though, from a fed-up Raph practically begging that you do something about it, and this was all you could think of.
but as odd as it was, you were sure this would ease Leo's worries, and as you predicted, it majorly did.
as all of these memories came up, you could feel yourself wearing out, both from the day you already had before this and the repetitive physical activity, so you decided to take a break and rest. you stood for a while to catch your breath, taking a second to stretch as well.
Leo approached you and awkwardly placed a hand on your back. "hope i didn't wear you out too much," he said, a little quieter than how he usually spoke.
"nah it's okay, i just need a second to breathe, then i'll be back at it," you trailed off, adding a thumbs up at the end.
"actually i was thinking we call it a day, is that okay?" he tone was gentle, still proving to be different to how he usually would talk.
although hesitant to agree, in reality you weren't sure how much longer you could go. it had been a solid two hours so far, and that was enough for you. you nodded, still trying to get your regular breathing pace back.
the two of you made your way out of the dojo, meandering to the kitchen where there was still some pizza left over and sitting on the counter. you each took your share, and sat across from each other at the table, indulging in the fuel that you both definitely needed.
there wasn't much talking, but there was a few more longer-than-usual eye contacts. this time they weren't awkward and neither of you made the first move to look away, although you couldn't help yourself from giggling a few times, which sent him into laughter as well.
after a successful meal, though, it seemed that it was getting late, and you knew you needed to get home before it got too dark. so, retrieving your stuff from the dojo, you waved goodbye to the same three that you had just greeted a few hours ago.
Leo insisted on walking you home, since you had already spent so much time together and you were very tired. you weren't necessarily walking together, more like he was keeping pace by hopping from roof to roof, but still you felt that much safer on your way home.
reaching your building, you stepped into the alley where Leo had dropped down to say goodbye to you, and as the two of you had the tradition, you shared a heartfelt hug for what felt like an eternity. in a burst of confidence, and just like the hundreds of corny movies you had watched, you placed the quickest kiss to Leo's cheek, and followed that by saying, "thanks for today, i'll text you later!" and as quick as you had kissed him, you scurried into your building and to your family's apartment, shutting the door behind you with a quiet sigh.
you hoped that this evening had proved to Leo that it wasn't his fault. and hopefully he wouldn't worry anymore. but really how could he after that night?
