It's a word play on Lewis being knighted and being addressed as Sir (in Italy knighthood is associated with the Republic "Cavaliere della Repubblica", whereas a baronet is also a peerage assigned by the Crown - I believe the Savoy royal family would assign that title instead of a knighthood when Italy was a monarchy, but I could be wrong! My Italian history needs some...
