Him and Toothless take to their normal routine, warming up with some basic aerial maneuvers until the sun peeks over the morning clouds. The flight turns quickly into more daring moves and freefalls and skimming the surface of the sea before making the climb back to the heavens.

On one particular dive, Hiccup catches sight of Viggo watching them. It could be a trick of the light, but it almost looks like longing painted on the man’s face and he has to wonder if they ever flew together. Did he share the sky with Viggo? Did he show the man how amazing it is to soar through the clouds on the back of a magnificent fire breathing beast and know that none of your responsibilities can touch you?

The Viggo he was at war with might not be able to appreciate it, but the Viggo that’s willing to change his entire business might enjoy it.

They come back down and Toothless hones in on the chief. Hiccup barely manages to escape the saddle before the dragon trots up to Viggo and greets him with a hard nudge along his side. Viggo grins at the nightfury and runs one hand over his scales, eyes soft and voice murmuring something Hiccup can’t hear.

It’s unsettling and nothing like Hiccup would expect from the man.

“Good morning, darling. Sleep well?” Viggo addresses Hiccup. He makes a noncommittal sound in lew of an answer. His eyes stay focused on the absentminded way Viggo continues to pet Toothless and the dragon soaks in the attention. “Care to join me for breakfast?”

Hiccup would rather eat in his room or find his father. But it would be a good opportunity to finally ask his questions. After his talk with Arne the previous night, Hiccup has plenty of questions for Viggo.

“Alright.”
