Riol is a good man.
He is kind, a capable intelligence agent, ever a friend and strong shoulder when she needs one. His eyes are sharp and his heart is true; she has never doubted him. He has held her tenderly, in love and in sorrow, and stood as a stone against her storm. He respects her, makes her laugh. He’s there for her victories, and defeats, and has stood with her against betrayal.
How easy it is to love him, and she does.
But he is not her soulmate.

There were never dramatic moments between them, no profound declarations. Even when it ended there were no tears, no impassioned pleas. Only the silence of her absence and the impossible distance between them.
The stolen moments between missions, intimate trysts amidst the stirrings of war, gave way to the demands of duty, an unrelenting call that neither could escape.
He is busy and so is she. There are enemy lines to scout and reports to make, burning villages and cries for justice. Most days there are malms between them, that became oceans, became stars.
He still cares, he will always care for her, but loving her is like loving a distant star. Burning bright, but cold and alien. And how could it be anything else? More and more, she is the Warrior of Light, and forgets how to be Alannah Corvaine.
And when she returns from the First there is a light gone from her, her spark diminished to a sputtering ember that she buries beneath dead coals.
She is all grief and rage, and he does not know this woman who goes to war against Garlemald.
Fierce

She can be so fierce...and yet...
“I will not leave, Safianne. Not unless you wish me to.” Silver eyes turned to him in surprise. Then her expression grew conflicted, words unable to come forth no matter how hard she tried. Eventually, step by hesitant step, she walked toward him. When she was close enough, her head dropped until her forehead rested against his chest. Estinien could see her shoulders trembling with each shaky breath that escaped her. Even if he didn’t know exactly what to say, she could hear his steady heartbeat. That was enough.
