Random Kirby fanfic I wrote. Kinda angsty, possibly a new idea for an Adeleine backstory. Just a little conversation between her and Ribbon.
Snow piles up outside of Dedede’s castle, signifying the start of the winter season on Pop Star. Peering through a window into the dark night as snow drifts down is Ribbon, looking out from Adeleine’s room. Adeleine is laying in her bed, faced away from the window.
“It’s so pretty…” Ribbon says longingly, tracing her small hand down the window. She flicks her wings as snowflakes fall down, watching them with great interest. From behind her, she hears her human friend make a low, almost unnatural sound.
“Can you sleep?” Adeleine asks, her tone much snappier than normal. Ribbon flinches at the harshness in her voice.
“I-I could,” Ribbon stammers, “but I… I’ve never really seen snow before.” She pauses for a moment. “Well, other than when we were on Shiv-“
“DO. NOT.” Ribbon presses herself against the window, now turned around. Adeleine is sitting up, pointing at her. “I don’t want to think about that place.” Adeleine sighs, and lays back down. Ribbon shakes, and looks from Adeleine to the snow outside.
“What… What happened..?” Ribbon asks meekly. Adeleine is silent. She sits up, more calmly, and looks at Ribbon.
“You just… mentioned something I don’t like. I don’t like snow. That’s all,” Adeleine says. Ribbon taps her foot on the windowsill.
“That’s not what I meant, Ado,” she says quietly. Adeleine winces. “I meant what happened on Shiver Star?” Adeleine looks down, clutching her blanket, her eyes dull.
“That’s the thing, Ribbon,” she says, her voice devoid of emotion. “I don’t remember. I remember the snow and the cold, the bitter freezing air, but… that’s all I can remember. I don’t know if I had anyone who cared about me. If… If there even were other humans.” Ribbon looks at her with sympathy, but Adeleine doesn’t meet her gaze, instead staring at the floor as she trembles.
“I’m sure someone cared,” Ribbon assures her. “If you managed to get out of there, someone did.” Adeleine looks up at her, her expression uncertain.
“I have this feeling they weren’t compassionate,” she mutters. Ribbon flutters over to her, and lands beside her, leaning against her. Adeleine doesn’t object, instead offer Ribbon a part of the blanket.
“You’re one of the nicest people I know,” Ribbon tells her. “I’m sure the other humans were great.” Adeleine gives her a sad smile, and Ribbon looks down. “Maybe there’s still some left out in the universe. Maybe they’re looking for you.” Adeleine laughs drily.
“If there were other humans out there still, I don’t think I’d have the label of ‘last living human’ slapped on me everywhere I go,” she says, her tone as bitter as the cold winds of her old home. Ribbon reaches out slowly and hugs her. Adeleine laughs slightly more genuinely, and smiles at Ribbon, some semblance of expression back on her face.
“What matters is that we all have you,” Ribbon says. “And you’re the best person ever and my absolute best friend.” Adeleine gently hugs Ribbon back, smiling.
“Thank you,” she whispers. Ribbon nods.
“But… if you ever do remember what happened… you can tell me,” Ribbon says. Adeleine rubs her hair, and Ribbon immediately goes to fix it.
“I’m not sure I will,” she says, “but you’ll be the first person I’ll tell if I do.” Ribbon smiles, and flies back over to the window. The snow is falling slower now.
“Do you wanna watch the snow?” she asks, turning back to Adeleine. She’s already laying down again, but facing the window.
“No thanks,” she says, sounding tired. “I’m still not a fan of it.” Ribbon nods, and watches the snow fall. She looks up at the sky, and through the breaks in the clouds, notices a distant planet in the night sky. Gray, like the clouds around it.
“What happened there?” Ribbon thinks. “How did it end up like that? Why doesn’t Adeleine remember anything other than that it was cold?” She sighs, and watches the snow, imagining Adeleine and other young humans playing in it.
