Is it just me, or do they resemble the MKDS models?

In Mario Kart 7, as in most 3D games, characters are replaced with low-quality models when they are far away from the camera.

In these screenshots, the characters' high-quality models were replaced with their low-quality counterparts by modifying the code, allowing them to be seen up close (please zoom in to view details).
