She finishes whispering in his ear.
He immediately feels the blood drain from his face, the churning feeling in his stomach making him feel physically sick. He looks at you one last time before you go on stage, how had he not noticed it before? God, he could see it in your eyes.
The tug in his heart screams at him to go up there, and put a stop to everything. Whisper to you that everything was going to be just fine, that you were going to be just fine. To take you home, and caress you in the endless numbers of ways he knew he could. That the resentment he thought he felt, was in fact never that. It was all simply a disillusion he had made for himself, a way subduing the guilt from the things he said. The things he’s done. All because he thought it’d easier to pretend to hate you than to face the reality that he never could.
He expected anger to form from the sight of seeing you tonight, it’s what he desperately wanted. The same anger he felt six months ago, but he couldn’t say he was surprised to find out that the anger simply no longer existed. Maybe the anger never even existed to begin with, maybe all he had been was just hurt. Heartbroken to say the least.
That feeling of heartache was what kept him up most nights. At times the feeling was quiet, allowing him to function, while other days it would rise to a crescendo and the anger would feel as if it were going to burst from his chest. But then there’d be the days where he was able to remember you with fondness, that was rare though, though he never took them for granted, enjoying the moment nonetheless.
But tonight he realized that the same warm feeling was indeed still there, it had always been there, lingering deep down in his heart. Desperate to escape the shadow that was engulfing it, while longing to fly like a bird again, stretching its wings and soar in the endless blue sky. Desperate to shower you with kisses, and playfully tickle you in bed after a night of countless rounds of sex. His arm draped over you, while your body was perfumed by his musky scent, the mumbled sound of “I love you” along with tiny moans escaping your lips as he’d slowly graze his lips along your neck.
He could no longer deny that all he had for you was love. He was tired of forcing himself to hate you, tired of the countless women he’d seen replace your side of the bed for the past six months, he was just tired.
You needed him right now more than ever. And God, did he need you. If he goes up there, everything would change. Whether it’d be for the better or worse, it didn’t matter, because he’d be with you. It’d be like one of those perfect endings in a movie, the cliche happily ever after the two main characters have after reuniting. It would be perfect...
But instead his muscles stayed tense, and his feet remained planted at where he stood. The feeling just wasn’t enough. Maybe in another world, he would have acted on that heavy feeling in his chest. Maybe in another world, he would’ve unhooked his arm from hers and gone to stop you. Maybe this is what needed to be done. No forget that, he was merely just a coward.
The sound of metal clinking on glass brings him back to reality, watching you as you made your way to the stage after being introduced. There was nothing but absolute stillness, an eerie sort of tranquility being radiated from you. But he knew.
He knew you weren’t fine and it killed him inside. You needed someone, a friend, a lover, just anyone. But all he could do was cross his fingers, and hope for the best as you took one last sip of your drink, double tapping the mic, ready to speak.
