Most Kids Didnt Even Know What The Original Show Was About - Tumblr Posts
Do some of y’all really think Once On This Island has nothing to do with race simply because the jr production doesn’t mention it??? If you have to take away something, that wasn’t even offensive to begin with, then that’s a sign that maybe you shouldn’t be doing it. But some of y’all still don’t seem to get that so lemme break it down by using references from the lyrics.
We Dance-
“Where the sea, sparkling in the sun, earns it the name “Jewel of the Antilles.”
The grands hommes, with their pale brown skins and their French ways, owners of the land and masters of their own fates.
And the peasants, black as night, eternally at the mercy of the wind and the sea...
Who pray constantly... to the gods.”
1. Jewel of the Antilles. What island is nicknamed the jewel, or pearl, of the Antilles??? Haiti. It is said to be called that due to its beauty and the fact that it gave France a lot of money.
2. The grands hommes have pale BROWN SKIN, aka they are light skin, French waves which they got from one of their ancestors cuz he is white. They literally have freedom and privilege due to being lighter. NOT WHITE.
3. This is pretty self explanatory but in case you don’t know due to being darker in complexion the peasants are left on their own. They do not have the privileges of the grands hommes and are looked down upon for their dark skin. That is called colorism. This is literally why Daniel’s father doesn’t want him to be with Ti Moune.
4. The gods are literal gods. They weren’t simply made up. They are worshipped in voudou. Voudou is a closed practice and is practiced by Black ppl. These gods are Black deities.
Now that’s only one (1) song and only a few lines that I used …Put it all together and what do you get? A story that discusses colorism as well as other topics such as love. It is not that hard to understand why it should not be done if the cast isn’t Black. Y’all need to get together.
