riff

riff is a son of zeus. he was claimed at twelve. his mom was abusive and he hates her. he ran away at twelve and found the camp with the help of his friend tony. tony is a son of apollo and works in the infirmary. riff is one of the head counselors of the zeus cabin. he's a pretty good guy, but he always seems to be in trouble for one thing or another.

connor

connor is a son of hades that was claimed at age fourteen. he's spent the past three years living at camp half blood and training for—honestly, he doesn't know what he's training for. but he's training for something. life isn't bad by any means. sure, he's got nightmares and sure, he's got adhd on top of all his other issues, but it could be worse. he could be dead. or a monster. (sometimes he thinks he's both, despite knowing that he's not). but yeah. life is good. as good as it can be when you're a half-blood, anyway.

dodge

dodge is a son of nemesis that was claimed at sixteen. his older sister, dayna, was killed by a cyclops while she was trying to get them both to camp, and dodge has been trying to find and kill it ever since. he spends his days at camp training to kill the cyclops. he keeps mostly to himself, but he’s a good friend to have around if things go sideways.

riff has a small gang called the jets that he typically runs with. he's nowhere near as infamous as kaz, but he has a reputation for being wily and not getting caught. he also has a reputation for being an asshole, but whether or not that's true is yet to be determined. he runs with the dregs on occasion but he mostly sticks to the jets.

dodge

dodge is a street magician in ketterdam. he goes to the local university and is trying to find the merchant that is responsible for his sister's death. he runs with the dregs occasionally but typically tends to work for whoever pays him the best. dodge is a shadow summoner that’s aware of his abilities. he’s very proficient with them, and he doesn’t try to hide his abilities from those he works with.

connor

connor was taken to the little palace at age five. he’s made aware of his abilities and what they entail, and he sets to training and learning about the history of ravka. he’s a heartrender that sometimes has issues getting his temper under control, but he’s good in a fight and he’s well known for his knowledge of ravkan history and literature from all over the world. he’s not the friendliest of people—being from kerch tends to lead to prejudices—but connor has a reputation for being scary when he’s angry, so it works out. when he’s seventeen, he’s sent on a mission to kerch. he’s tasked with finding information on the merchant council, to see if any of them are selling jurda parem to the fjerdans. he works undercover at the bandycat. he hates it, but it’s a good place to be in order to hear any secrets.

art

art is a tidemaker indentured to patrick zweig. he was sent to kerch by the little palace to see if any of the merchant council was selling grisha secrets to ravka’s enemies. unfortunately, his ship was captured by kerch slavers on the way there and art was sold to the house of snow. he spends two years there. he’s absolutely miserable and he wants nothing more than to return to ravka. when his indenture is bought by patrick zweig, art knows that’s no longer possible. patrick is one of art’s least favorite clients. he’s a rich merchant that spends his money on whatever he wants and he doesn’t like sharing. art’s indenture with the house of snow is ended, but his indenture with patrick starts the next day. patrick’s wife, tashi, is just as bad as her husband. art can’t escape, because patrick has eyes everywhere and tashi seems to know what he’s planning before art himself even knows. he wants, desperately, to escape, but he doesn’t know where he’ll go if he gets out of ketterdam. he can’t return to ravka as a failure, but he can’t stay in kerch, either.

star wars

riff

riff is a smuggler with a small network of people working for him. he's force sensitive and he's managed to figure out the general logistics of how the force works through trial and error. riff's gang, the jets, are the only ones that know riff is force sensitive. they call themselves the jets because they're fast and quick and pretty good at evading the law. they all have a tattoo somewhere of either a j or the silhouette of riff's ship. the sharks are a group that's sort of a smuggling group. they're more well off than riff and the jets, but not by much. they just want the jets to stop terrorizing the galaxy with their escapades. they get into fights a lot and the local authorities consider both groups an equal nuisance.

dodge

dodge is force sensitive and mostly does odd jobs around the outer rim. he has a small ship that he'll occasionally smuggle with but he mostly keeps to himself. he's trying to find and kill the bounty hunter that killed his older sister, dayna. while he tends to stick to small jobs in the outer rim, he will venture into the more expensive cities if he's paid well for it.

art

in the early days of the republic, there was a jedi known as art donaldson. he was a brilliant jedi knight, and those that knew him said he was one of the best jedi they had ever seen. when order sixty six was executed, art donaldson disappeared. the jedi that survived the purge assumed that he’d gone into hiding as they had. and then, a year after the execution of order sixty six, there were whispers of a new sith lord attacking camps in the outer rim. darth kyros, they call him. there aren’t typically survivors of his attacks, so the information on him is limited. all that’s known about him is that he’s dangerous and not someone to be crossed. somehow, a former jedi manages to survive an attack. darth kyros is art donaldson, he says. it sounds impossible. but another former jedi comes forward and says the same thing. after at least five have agreed, there can be no more denying it. art donaldson must be returned to the light side of the force. it takes a long time, but he is eventually returned to the light. art doesn’t talk about his time as darth kyros. if pressed for information, he says that the sith captured and brainwashed him until he broke. he becomes a member of the rebellion and is a valuable asset when it comes time to target the death star.

connor

connor is a jedi padawan. he’s an extremely volatile jedi padawan. he doesn’t have control of his emotions yet and he lashes out in anger a lot more than his master would like. the other masters are worried. the other padawans fear his anger and mock his lack of control. he’s too susceptible to the dark side, the masters say. he must get his emotions under control. connor doesn’t know if he can do that, but he’s not really willing to try. eventually, he is banished from the jedi order. he makes a living in the outer rim as best he can. when the rebellion starts, he keeps his head down. he doesn’t want to get dragged back into the order. they didn’t want him, after all.

district twelve. died in the arena. reaped. connor is the son of the mayor in district twelve. he's not very well liked by anyone and he tends to wander around the district until nightfall. there are rumors he's addicted to morphling, but no one knows for sure. he's reaped at seventeen and dies in the arena, poisoned with nightlock by a tribute from district seven.

dodge

district ten. victor. volunteered. dodge's sister dayna was reaped and killed in the arena when dodge was sixteen. he wanted to volunteer the next year, but his mother stopped him before he could. he volunteers at eighteen instead, before they can even call the name of the male tribute. he won by cornering the final tribute and dropping a rock on his head. he returns to district ten to mentor, but he never stops plotting to kill snow. the second he hears about the rebellion, he joins.

jack twist

district ten. reaped. victor. jack is reaped at eighteen. he quickly becomes a capitol favorite, thanks to his natural charm and good looks. he racks up thousands of sponsors and donations. he narrowly avoids death at the hands of a tribute from district two and manages to win the games by using the tribute's weapon against him. he returns to district ten and mentors tribute after tribute until the capitol calls him back. they want him to work in the academy, they tell him. they want him to train the future generation of presidents and capitol elite. he doesn't know why. but he knows he can't refuse, so he moves and spends the rest of his life working for the capitol. but when the rebellion comes around, jack is one of the first to join the ranks.

jack kelly

district twelve. reaped. supposedly died in the arena, survived. jack kelly is reaped from district twelve. he’s well liked by the capitol and the fact that he makes it to the final four tributes does absolutely nothing to quell the capitol’s love for him. unfortunately, he’s killed by a tribute from district two and the capitol forgets about him relatively quickly, as they’re wont to do. at least, that’s what the story is. in truth, jack kelly had been incredibly outspoken against the games. he’d nearly succeeded in starting a rebellion. the capitol couldn’t have that. they staged his death and when he regained consciousness, he was told that he’d be working for the gamemakers. he hates it, but he doesn’t see any way out of it. so he works for the gamemakers and hopes for a day that a rebellion will come.

He scoffed a little. “Sometimes?” In Connor’s experience, it was all the time. “It’s more like all the time, I think.” He shrugged a little. “But that’s just how life is, right?”

Connor does not want to be here. It’s bad enough that he’s back in school, but Cynthia had insisted he find someone to “tutor him in everything he’d missed while he was out.” That’s how she’d put it. Like he’d missed a few days because of the flu, instead of what had actually happened. Connor didn’t understand his mother, but he guessed she was trying to smooth things over as best she could. Most of the time, it didn’t do anything but annoy him.

He slumps further into his seat, picking at his nail polish. It’s chipped in some spots. He’ll have to repaint it when he gets home. He doesn’t know who’s tutoring him. He hadn’t really tried to find anyone—no one really talks to him very much, but they hadn’t really talked to him before he tried to kill himself, so Connor isn’t that upset about it—and he doesn’t even know if anyone’s going to show up. He stretches his legs out in front of him and glances around the library again. He still doesn’t see anyone.

Connor doesn’t think he agrees. Life sucks. Life has always sucked and life will continue to suck until he dies. There’s no point in trying to sugarcoat it. “No.” He’s sure of that. He doesn’t think there’s anyone in the world that makes it out without some sort of trauma or issues. “That’s impossible. And if you think it’s not, you’re an idiot.”

“ it   shouldn’t   have   to   be   , ”   she   offers.   tightening   of   lips   together   and   shrug   pushing   at   her   shoulders.   it’s   the   naivety   of   life   …   but   there’s   still   goodness   that   echoes   in   her   heart.   “ do   you   think   anyone   makes   it   out   …   unscathed? ”

He’s surprised to see Johanna practically running into the library. He’s even more surprised to see the tear in her leggings. He doesn’t say anything about it, but it’s surprising. She’s normally poised and perfectly collected. To see her with torn leggings and looking as though she might cry is a change that Connor isn’t used to. But he’s not going to mention it. He doesn’t think she wants to talk about it, and if they start talking about Johanna’s issues—whatever those may be—they could start talking about Connor’s. And he doesn’t want that.

He leans out of his seat to grab the fallen book. Johanna beats him to it. He slumps a little in his seat, picking at his nail polish. It’s chipped again. His picking isn’t helping. “I flunked it.” Geography has never been his best subject, and Connor doesn’t see the point in putting in an effort if he’s just going to fail anyway. “Got a 26.” He had the chance to make up his grade, but he didn’t take it. He’ll have to repeat senior year at the rate he’s going, but it’s better than graduating with the likes of Evan Hansen and Jared Kleinman.

He has an essay to write about the Great Wall of China. He doesn’t want to write it. Connor likes history, but he’s picky about what he likes. Writing about the Great Wall of China seems like a middle school task, not a high school one. He pulls the assignment out anyway. It’s due in three days and he’s barely started it. “Here.”

there's a tear in her leggings as she comes practically running into the library. the feeling of air against her knee might make her cry any other day. for now, she cannot spare any tears or even give herself a moment in the facilities to blink them away. her guardian's dinner party was a few nights ago still, yet she's still recovering. it isn't as if anything bad happened... not as bad as things could have been. her goal: get to the public library as soon as possible. end the tutoring session early. she needs to hide behind a few shelves. this won't do her any favors, connor hates her. that, she's certain of.

connor can hate her. johanna hates those dinner parties.

pile of books crash onto the table. the one on top of the stack lands on the floor. a library peeks her head at her from over the desk. it isn't like johanna to be anything but the upmost careful. a mumbled apology as she scoots her chair in. ❝ what are we doing today? ❞ she puts the fallen novel back. ❝ oh! you had a test? the geography one? ❞ a pause to bite her lip. ❝ how did that go? i think--- ❞ pages fly by her fingertips. ❝ ---we said that we would focus on history today? you're good at that. you have an assignment? or something? ❞

He doesn’t know much about the attempted escape. He wishes he’d thought of trying to escape, but he knows it wouldn’t end well. He doesn’t think whoever it was is having any fun right now. Not that Fogg’s is fun to begin with, but everyone knows that people who try to escape get the worst punishments.

He doesn’t know what made him ask the question. It’s a stupid question, and he knew the answer. He’s just been distracted lately. “I’m fine.” He hopes she doesn’t ask again. He knows he probably looks weird. He’s sitting with his arms wrapped around his knees, picking at the skin of his palm and his nail polish. “I just—I’m fine.” He doesn’t want to unpack all of his everything right now. He never does. But he doesn’t want to tell Johanna that his sort-of-not-really-ex boyfriend is coming to see him, because that would mean telling her why he’s in here in the first place, and he’s not doing that. He doesn’t even know if he and Miguel are exes, because he doesn’t even know if they were dating before Connor fucked it up. “Don’t worry about me.”

someone attempted to escape and johanna only wishes she could call herself that person. a few weeks into being sent here, she'd tried. she thought back to the c.ount of m.onte cristo and wondered if she could dig a hole underneath the hospital or even if she could sneak into a body bag. but she had no bowl nor had anyone perished. the escape that was attempted was an act of pure desperation. whoever it was that had made a run for it was only stopped by locked doors. now, there are extra staff on every shift. a careful eye, especially on the youth wards. johanna wonders if they'd ( no one would tell them who it was ) gotten a taste of truly fresh air. not little glimpses of it between barred windows: that isn't the same. did they feel like they were flying as they ran down the white hallways?

❝ they die, ❞ she says softly. she grips the back of the chair before sitting. it's been weeks since the infirmary, yet johanna's back still reminds her of those nurses. that had been her closest to escape. while laying under those crisp sheets, she wondered if they would believe her if she had suddenly "died" and she could try to swim out of the ocean like edmond d.antes had. foolish girl, she thought to herself later, she doesn't know how to swim. and there wasn't an ocean anywhere close. toes push her closer to connor. glancing over him, he looks... well, not at his best. ❝ are you alright? what's happened? ❞ was it the extra staff? the pressure of tightened security? ❝ connor? ❞

Connor isn’t sure of anything anymore. Ever since he’d heard what had happened with Evan and Jared, he’d been holed up in his room trying to understand why the fuck Evan had done that. What the hell could possess him to take advantage of his parents and sister like that? Connor doesn’t get it. He isn’t trying to, but he really doesn’t get it.

Zoe’s voice is muffled by his door, but there’s no mistaking his sister’s question. “I’m fine.” He thinks they both know he’s lying. He pulls the door open to stare at her for a moment. “Do you need something?” He doesn’t know why else Zoe would be talking to him. Sure, she seems to want to make an effort, but Connor knows her better than that. She probably hates him. He won’t blame her if she does. God knows he’s been a shit brother. He could say he’s been trying to work on it, but he’s not entirely sure if that’s true or not, considering he’s been shutting himself in his room when he doesn’t need to eat or go to school.

Why are you like this? The question makes him scoff. Zoe should know why he’s like this. If she doesn’t, she’s a lot dumber than Connor thought. Not that he thinks Zoe’s dumb. Zoe’s a goddamn genius. She could probably get into Harvard if she wanted to. He won’t tell her that, but he thinks it’s true. “Seriously.” It’s not even a question, just a flat statement as he stares at her. “You’re asking me why I’m like this.” He scoffs again. “Damn. I thought you were smarter than that.”

His eyebrows go up before he can stop them. “Right.” Again, it’s just a flat, emotionless statement. “See, I might believe you if you hadn’t gone running to Evan fucking Hansen the second he started spouting bullshit about me.” He can feel himself getting worked up. Zoe doesn’t deserve to be on the receiving end of one of Connor’s outbursts, but she just might end up there anyway. “But you did, so.” He shrugs. “Forgive me for not believing you.”

the sigh she lets out is that of a petulant teenager: pretty blue eyes rolling before her brother even finishes his sentence & zoe is certain that hell will freeze over before her brother is ever kinder to her [ she isn't one to talk though, she's never been particularly kind to him either, but the difference is that she's TRYING ] ❛ why are you like this? ❜ a genuine question, even if the answer isn't one she really wants. nails dig crescent shaped indents into the soft flesh of her arms, head shaking until brown curls fall in a curtain around her face.

❛ i'm just trying to be a better sister. ❜ it's said quietly, almost desperately — as if questioning why he has to rebuff her efforts like this, when she was doing her best to make things right. they'd never be a perfect family, she's accepted that, but she'd like to at least have a better relationship with her brother. even if she didn't truly deserve his forgiveness.
