loud rapping on your door interrupts your state of potential slumber. you groan, rising up from the couch, the still watching? screen on the tv taunting you as you approach the door. you peek out of the peephole to see your ex boyfriend standing there, shivering in the cold.

you tug the door open quickly, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "jake? are you okay?"

jake meets your gaze, eyes looking wetter than usual. "come inside," you tell him, grabbing his arm gently and pulling him into your space. you lock the door behind you before turning to him, a strange look adorning your features.

"baby..." his voice is hoarse as he stands there, body still quivering from the temperature outside.. a small whine escapes his lips when you meet his gaze once more.

"are you okay, jake?"

jake's bottom lip quivers as he shakes his head, his head feeling full of cotton balls as his waterline brims with tears.

you frown, watching him, "what's wrong?"

"jake..." your lips come into a pout, "are you sure?"

he nods quickly, eyes still glistening as he watches you. "i'm sorry i left... i didn't... i didn't want you to have to deal with me while i'm like this, i'm so broken, i couldn't bare the thought of you seeing me like this... but it's gotten so much worse and i miss you so much..." jake whispers through his choked sobs.

the pads of your thumbs clean off his cheeks gently, affection seeping into your gaze. "baby, you know i would've helped you." he whimpers at your words, teary eyes watching you. "it's okay, my love... you're okay, we're gonna be okay."

a sob escapes his mouth as you pull him into your chest, his tears seeping wetness into your tshirt. your hand moves to his hair, raking your fingers through it gently, something he's always loved that you do for him. "i'm not going anywhere, jakey. you're safe now, baby."

jake heaves a large sigh, the weight of the world temporarily falling off of his shoulders as you hold him. and all his worries are silent for the night when he falls asleep with you in his arms, for the first time in weeks.
