Natsu is sooo smart!! Even from the beginning!!!!! First of all, he has high emotional intelligence (saving Macao for Romeo, recognizing Gray’s suicidal tendencies, reading Erza for filth in the tower of heaven, the fucking rainbow Sakura????). Natsu cares about his family and that means knowing how and when to take care of them! He hides it bc being vulnerable means not being strong for the guild in his eyes (part of me wants to say something about Mira teasing him for crying in the flashbacks but I know it has to be more than that), but he recognizes when to step in and what to do a lot of the time (e.g., giving Lucy space when her dad died and letting her decide when it was time to come back to them)
More than emotional intelligence, just like you said, look at the sheer battle iq of this man. You already talked about his versatility on teams and ability to read his opponents, but more than that he is just such an experienced wizard. Not only that but he was forced into an independent role at a young age. He’s strong enough to fight for himself and he learned the hard way how to win fights. He was Happy’s single father for years!! Natsu snaps at Lucy in the Everlue Mansion mission because he takes his jobs seriously and she was betraying their contract. Back to the point, Natsu was the one to figure out Kaby was putting on a front for that mission. He’s incredibly intelligent, more than anyone gives him credit for. Ultear says in the Galuna arc, when Natsu decides to tilt the temple (FUCKING GENIUS PLAY AND NO ONE EVER TALKS ABOUT IT), that he’s not as much of an idiot as she thought.
Like?? As much as I’ve seen people hate on it, eating the etherion in the tower of heaven was so smart!! It hurt him, yes, but it was still the right play if he wanted to win that fight. He knew he couldn’t win if he was running on empty. There’s a reason he’s the one that wins most of the big fights (beyond general shonen protagonist shenanigans)
TL;DR: Natsu’s reckless but he’s not an idiot, and people should accept that he’s actually really smart
