A Little Story Time for Black Writers and Other POC Writers

Once upon a time, 18 Year-Old Me was just an amateur writer and a pro at reading fanfics in minutes. However, because it was my senior year of high school and I was constantly busy, I became a reader.

A thing I noticed about fanfic writers is that they assumed the reader was white or if the main character was an OC, they made them white. Having enough of not being relatable to the character, I made a post asking for writers to include black people.

While I was hoping for people to agree with me, I got something completely different.

Writers from all sorts of fandoms were coming at me saying that if this was such a problem, I could do this on my own. I could be the one to write for black people as it wasn’t their problem. Some of them called me racist for requesting that black people be included. Some of them sent me links to fics that did include blacks but we were horribly portrayed. At the end of the day, let’s just say that the post was deleted because I was embarrassed for requesting such a simple thing.

It’s currently the end of March 2018 and I’m 19. I’m not only a writer for blacks but other people of color. I’m loving the feedback I get for my work and I’m especially happy to see more fics that include my race or non-blacks who are people of color.

The funny thing about it all? Whites are asking for me to include them in my fics. My response to them?

“Nope. Only for people of color.”
