Welcome, Japanese archaeologists to a new installment, this time I will talk about Obon, the festival of the dead, and with that said, make yourselves comfortable and let's get started. - In Japan, in the days of August, from the 13th to the 16th, Obon is celebrated, which we can see in many anime, movies and doramas. I have already mentioned that these things should not only be seen as mere drawings, as they have a lot of cultural and historical meaning. This festivity has many very characteristic elements such as the Gozan no Okuribi also called Daimonji, very characteristic of the end of these festivities, because they are usually a series of drawings of a torii and others such as the kanji of fire, to mention some examples. - Cucumbers (used for when the deceased arrives) and aubergines (otherwise when the deceased leaves) symbolise the arrival and return of the deceased to the afterlife. There are many countries that celebrate this festival in different ways, but they all have in common that they honour their ancestors, it is a festival that is 400 to 500 years old and is of Buddhist origin. To end the publication we will mention the Awa-Odori, (Odori means dancing) and dates back to the 16th century. - I hope you like it and see you in future publications, have a nice week.
Hour 7: Liminal Spaces and the Crossing Thereof
Summary: The Senju Ghost had started haunting the Uchiha settlement, and they were eager to put a stop to it. So eager in fact, that they were willing to offer up Madara as a ghostbride.

Author: @titaniafaeriequeen Rating: Mature Fandom: Naruto Relationship: Uchiha Madara/Senju Tobirama Other Tags: fluff, ghost marriage, sort of, misunderstandings, demisexual Madara, Uchiha Izuna lives Word Count: 7,802 (complete)
Testing his newest invention, Tobirama had eventually moved further away from the Senju settlement, pushing to find the limits of its range. It was during this that an unprecedented opportunity had presented itself—Uchiha Madara was rapidly moving towards his location. Who better to pit himself against to test both the endurance, and whether or not the Sharingan could spot it? Tobirama could not really think of anyone else, except perhaps Uchiha Izuna, although the younger Uchiha was, at least by Tobirama’s estimate, a fraction or two below Madara in skill.
Tobirama waited until Madara burst into the clearing, then he set off in a panicked rush. Minus the actual panic. And with the addition of an injury to his leg that he didn’t actually have. Feigning being hurt and exhausted, he made sure to not move any faster than that Madara quickly gained on him. Then, as if he had come to the realization that he would not manage to outpace the Uchiha, he stopped on a branch, leaning heavily on one leg, brandishing a kunai in one hand, and moving the other through a long series of hand seals. Madara crashed into him before he could finish the jutsu.

Hour 1: Fire and Smoke
Summary:
Smoke rising from the Uchiha compound is always a concern. Aburame Shige should go check, just in case.
(And make several worrying realizations in rapid succession.) (Maybe he can help them, too.)

Warnings: This fic does have a background of a deadly epidemic, and some inspiration was taken from Covid. Nothing very detailed; mostly things like social distancing and overfull hospitals. There's no detail about the illness itself. Everyone is weathering the epidemic better than they would have before Konoha. Finally, there is a brief, oblique mention of lung cancer - I used the term sapping cough for it.
A plume of smoke drifts up towards the sun. Shige, on his way home from the new Mission Archives, eyes it speculatively. It's rather early for Obon fires, in his opinion, but the Aburame as a whole are generally not fond of fire and he knows his clan is more... conservative in festival fire than most clans.
That smoke seems to be coming from the Uchiha compound. Curious, Shige adjusts course to investigate.
He finds a single fire burning near the compound entrance, and a lone Uchiha – a kunoichi, though retired, he thinks, when Konoha's building prosperity allowed her to – keeping watch of it. Perhaps not an Obon fire after all, then?
Shige meanders up the path to the Uchiha compound entrance, his innate shinobi curiosity overcoming his better sense in leaving the Uchiha clan well enough alone. The bonfire is just inside the compound entrance. Not many people are around, just a gate guard who keeps their distance from the blaze, though they let Shige in with a curious glance and a polite nod, and the kunoichi who's focused intently on the bonfire.
There appears to be people in that bonfire.

Hour 3: Seeing You (In My Dreams)
Summary:
Madara has always wanted to see his brother again.
He never expected it to happen like this.

Author: @phlebaswrites Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Fandom: Naruto Relationship: Uchiha Izuna & Uchiha Madara, Uchiha Hikaku/Uchiha Madara Word Count: 1,029 (Complete) Warning: Canonical Character Death

Madara grips the shinai in his hand tightly, too tightly in fact, but he can't seem to let go.
He used to spar with Izuna like this, but that was when they were children, true children, long before they began to handle live steel.
Before Hashirama, and the dreams that came with him.
But his hands are the ones Madara sees every day, bearing the callouses of gunbai and kusarigama, and the hair which cuts across his face is long. Most of all though, he looks at Izuna through the red wash of the Sharingan… and his brother is blind.
Because his eyes are in Madara's face.

Hour 6: Monsoon
Summary: With an unseasonably late monsoon sweeping through the compound, the Uchiha are too busy to light the bonfire at the end of Obon that would light their ancestors' path back to the Pure Lands. One unfortunate accident later, and the bonfire is late for sure.
But Izuna has some concerns about the ghosts of his ancestors getting lost - or, worse, staying here with him. While he's alive.

Izuna took a moment to wring his hair out, water flowing in a steady stream to puddle on the engawa before dripping through the cracks between the boards. The urgent tasks were done – elders and young children taken up to the healing ward, which was built on high ground specifically so that the injured wouldn’t need to be rescued during monsoons. Their food stores were secured. Most of their livestock had been taken from the pastures; the chickens had fled to their coops, which teams of shinobi had raised to be a bit higher when the rain started. Izuna’s job, checking on the civilians under evacuation and offering help to anyone who could benefit from a touch of chakra to get through a waterfall’s worth of rain, was nearly done. He’d just finished checking this house; the family had already evacuated.
One last family to check on. With a sigh, he braced himself and ran into the rain again, suppressing a flinch at the heavy drum of incessant water on his armor.

Izuna visited Tobirama at night, with a red botanical lantern in his hand.

The cicadas cried through the night. They screamed for love and the end of their life. Inside the house, Tobirama was calmly writing letters to the Daimyo. The summer this year was particularly harsh, and he foresaw a freezing winter, so he would like to <s>beg</s> haggle for a better deal. He would prefer to finish the letter quickly and then get some sleep before tomorrow's battle with the Uchiha. He would need all of his focus to fight Izuna.
Suddenly, from the periphery of his sight, he saw a light shining behind the shoji door to the garden.
"Excuse me," said a man with a voice so familiar and yet so impossible to be here. They had never met in their on the grounds of either clan. It would have been too treacherous, too bold.
<i>What were the guards doing?</i>
Tobirama pulled out a kunai, but he didn't open the door. He didn't feel any killing intent, or anything at all from the other person. <i> Was it a genjutsu?</i>
"If you won't open the door, I will come in myself." The other person announced.
Tobirama created a bunshin to stand in his place while he hid in the ceiling.
The door slid open and the person outside walked in. His steps were silent as if he was tiptoeing. His heels were covered by his long mantle. The mantle was not buttoned, just closed from the wrong side. And his face was shadowed by the light of the large lantern, as red as the spring peony.
It was Izuna.
"Tsk tsk tsk. Don't hide, Tobirama. What are you afraid of?" He said, walking right onto the kunai. Tobirama's clone would have moved away, but it was frozen in place.
Red blood bled like a wave and soaked his mantle. It was where Tobirama had last stabbed him.
Izuna smiled and looked right into the eyes of the real Tobirama.
And then Tobirama felt warm like he was sunbathing. He blinked. In front of his eyes were his brushes. He had fallen asleep on his desk and the evening sun casted shadows into the room.
There was no Izuna.

For once, Tobirama’s antisocial tendencies work in his favor. No one bothers him when he leaves early, setting lanterns out for his little brothers and slipping some senbon to Tadako-chan for her vegetable horses. He doesn’t stay long on Obon; after years he had finally accepted that his grief is a private thing, not easily shown to other people.
It isn’t grief driving him away from his clan’s festivities this year, though it makes a good excuse.
He retrieves a prisoner from the little jail he built underneath his lab - a bloodline thief whose unit he busted last week. It seems appropriate. It’s easy to ready his other materials: chakra ink and seal paper, a seal already sketched on a large scroll. Easier still to make the sacrifice.
Tobirama can feel a presence, lingering in his lab. Heavier than his last attempt.
A body coalesces. His chakra is not depleted, not as much as previous attempts.
Pale eyelids blink open; the eyes beneath look pure black, iris and sclera blending together. A smile stretches across a bone-white, cracked face. “I told you it would work better today.”
Tobirama rolls his eyes, but cannot repress a fond smile. “Hello again, Izuna.”
Hour #10: A Lonesome Death

I wrote this in a hurry and didn't do research on Japanese custom on wills and their executions.
The wind bit while the sky shed tears when Hilaku couldn’t. News about the new crater outside of Konoha travelled fast. No one saw the return of Hokage, but everyone had heard about the death of Uchiha Madara.
Hikaku immediately called for a team to retrieve his clan head’s body, with force if necessary, but there was no body to be bought home, and under the opposition of the elders led by the newly ascended clan head (after acting as the regent for years), there would be no funeral as well.
Hikaku kneeled in front of his family Kamidana, the gold glittered behind the dark wood, which was smoked black with time. The incense from the morning had finished burning. He put his palm together, eyes closing, and asked for forgiveness for the disturbance.
Pulling his sleeve up, Hikaku fingered behind the cabinet. The dust stuck on his fingers. Without further hassle, he found what he was looking for. An envelope, yellowed with time, wrinkled in his hand.
It was Madara’s will.
