“Are you sure he’s alright?” Sakuya asked nervously.

“Chillax, Sakusaku! Chikachon tends to come home late a lot, it’s kinda his thing!” Kazunari exclaimed, trying to calm him.

“But MIDNIGHT?! I’d think he’d be done with work by now.” Banri piped up.

The dorms were in chaos. This was the fifth night in a row that Chikage had come home late from work. Sure, it was a common occurrence, especially given that he seemed to live a double life, but after “the incident” it had dwindled.

If that was the case, then why was he staying out now?

Itaru had come home hours ago, simply stating that Chikage had to work overtime, but last time you checked, overtime didn’t go this late, nor was it this frequent.

“If everybody could just calm down for a sec, we could actually figure this out.” You loudly proclaimed in an attempt to quiet the constant chatter.

“Well, what do you want us to do?” Banri asked, sneering.

“I don’t know, send a search party or something?” You suggested nervously.

“What would that do? I’m sure he doesn’t want to be bothered with whatever he’s doing.” Sakyo complained.

“Well, I don’t know, he could be in danger!” You exclaimed.

“Knowing Chikage, I think he can handle whatever he’s dealing with.” Sakyo rebutted.

You sighed, already over this conversation.

“Fine. I’ll call him, and if he doesn’t pick up, I’ll go searching for him.”

“If you go out, I’ll come too.” Masumi added desperately.

“Absolutely not.” Tsuzuru butt in, grabbing Masumi’s shoulders to steer him away from you.

You pulled your phone out of your pocket, selected Chikage’s contact, and called him up.

One ring. Nothing, as expected.

Two rings. Nothing, once more.

Three rings. Chikage, please…

Four.

Five. “The number you called is curren-“ you hung up.

“Well, that’s that, I’m going.”

“Fine,” Sakyo sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He then gripped your shoulders forcefully, making sure your eyes met.

“Please be careful. I don’t want this company being put in jeopardy because our director got kidnapped or something.”

You faked a carefree smile.

“I’ll be fine, don’t worry! And even if I do get kidnapped, I know things will probably turn out okay. I mean, it’s happened before, right?”

No matter how jokingly you said those things, you felt that trauma flash back at you. No matter how much you tried not to worry, you felt yourself shake.

But now wasn’t the time for that, you thought as you stood up from the clutch to go to the door and bid the company farewell for a bit. You grabbed your bag, stuffed your essentials into it, then said goodbye to everyone.

The streets of Veludo always felt different at night. They were empty, with no street acts, and everybody was either watching or barely leaving a performance. Due to that, the city stayed relatively crime-free.

Relatively. You know, given the fact that you’d encountered shady characters in the past.

Either way, your search for Chikage had been fruitless. It may have been easier if you’d known any of his coworkers or if he picked up his phone, but even so, there was always the possibility of some trickery afoot.

Given that this was Chikage, those chances were raised.

Suddenly, you saw a swatch of green pass by you.

You turned around, hoping to find your missing member, only to see nothing but a dark alleyway behind you. Peeking in, there was a glint of light that shone, reflecting more green and a tall figure.

You gasped.

Fucking FINALLY.

You wanted to shout his name, to come closer, but you were stopped when you made out how vigorously he was moving.

That can’t be good.

From the little light you had, you noticed another figure with him.

There were no discernible features, all you could see was their black hood. That, and that they too were jumping and throwing punches.

Your eyes shot open, and you quickly attempted to maneuver to press your back against the front of the building that flanked the alleyway.

Unfortunately, the figure saw you before you managed to get away. You felt them yank your wrist, gripping it so tightly that your skin paled, pulling you into their fight.

“Well, well, well, what do we have here?”

“Chikag-“ you were cut off by their hand clamping over your mouth.

In the faint light, you could see Chikage’s face shift from determination to horror in a matter of seconds.

“Director, what the fuck are you doing here?” He asked, worry and disdain filling his voice.

Your response only came out as muffled screams.

“Ah, a director, huh? How strange. Someone who’s apparently above you can’t fight for themself?”

As an attempt of get the figure to holding you hostage to shut up, you spat on his hand.

Sadly, that only made the situation worse.

“What is wrong with you, you little slut?!” He screeched, taking their hand from your mouth to wipe it on their pants, “That’s it, you really asked for this, didn’t you?” With that, they pulled out a gun, holding it to your head.

You felt your blood run cold.

“Struggle, and you get shot. Got it?”

Chikage could only watch in terror as you silently pleaded for your life, not trying to provoke your captor. His eyes darted around the scene, trying to find a way to escape with both of you safe.

The figure sneered.

“Come on, aren’t you gonna save them? Don’t you LOVE them?! If that’s the case, why don’t you go on and do it?!!”

That was the final straw.

In a split second, the enemy was disarmed, your wrists were free, and you were held by a very angry Chikage with a gun pointed towards a man’s head.

“Now, how about we make a new deal, hm? Either you keep quiet about this and nothing happens, you make a scene and we turn you in to the police, or you try anything funny and you get shot. So, how about it?”

Chikage’s eyes were filled with manic, a deranged smirk on his face.

Now it was time for the enemy to panic as they realized what kind of person they had provoked. They slowly raised their hands up, shakily nodding as Chikage slowly lowered the gun. He gave them a pleasant smile, though given the situation it still seemed insane.

“Good, that’s what I thought. I’ll be keeping this, and you can feel free to run along now.”

They nodded once more, making a run for it.

Once they were gone, the shock and panic caught up to you, and your tears flooded out as you crumpled to the ground. Chikage casually threw the gun to the side, then knelt down to tend to you.

“How many times has I told you not to do anything when I come home late?” He scolded, only to be met with blubbering. He sighed, gingerly placing a hand on your shoulder.

“I’m sorry. Are you okay? Any wounds that need to be tended to?”

You nodded.

“I’ll take that as a yes to both. Here, give me your wrists.”

You showed them to him. They still had marks from where you were gripped so tightly.

“Oh, that doesn’t look good. There’s not much we can do about it now. Is there anything else that needs care?”

You shook you head.

“Can you stand?”

A nod.

“Do you want help getting up?”

A hesitation, then another nod.

“Okay.”

Chikage stood up from where he was kneeling, then offered his arm for you to use to boost yourself up.

“There we go. Let’s get out of here, shall we? I haven’t had dinner yet, so do you wanna grab curry and head home?”

You nodded.

“Let’s go, then.”

With that, Chikage escorted you down the street to your shared favorite curry restaurant. You both sat down, ordered your usual meals, then were left in silence.

“It’s been a few minutes, are you doing any better?” He asked.

“A little.” You meekly replied.

“Oh, you’re comfortable talking now, that’s an improvement.”

“Yeah.”

“Listen,” Chikage’s voice became soft, “I’m sorry you had to get caught up in that. This is why I tell you not to panic when I come home late. What did you think you were doing?”

“I’m sorry, we were all worried and-“

“Never mind. We’re all family now, right? I should’ve known you’d worry.” His expression softened, a rare sight for him.

You sat in a slightly awkward silence for a few moments before you remembered something.

“Oh, I should probably LIME the company group chat, they should know what’s going on.”

“Don’t tell them what happened,” he pleaded, “just say that we’re safe and we’re getting dinner. They don’t need to be more concerned than they already are.”

You gave him a weak smile.

“You’ve gone soft, Chika.”

“I’m not gonna deny that one.” He replied, sighing as as genuine smile crept its way onto his face.

Once the dm was sent, your food arrived.

Halfway through the meal, and with you fully calm, a question popped into your mind.

“Chika?”

“Hm?”

“Do you mind explaining why you were fist fighting someone in an alleyway in the first place?”

You saw his expression fall for a moment, but he tried to remain collected.

“Let’s just say my organization got a little tangled with another’s.”

“Will you ever tell us what it is you even do in that organization of yours?”

“Nope.” He replied with a wink and a sly smile as he returned to eating.

When the check came, you quickly pulled out your wallet when Chikage stopped you, quickly giving the waiter his card.

“For the inconvenience” he had claimed.

Leaving the restaurant to head home, there was still one last question in the back of your mind.

“Chika?”

“What now?”

“Was it true?”

“Was what true?”

“What they said back there. Did you save me because you loved me?”

He stopped walking, his expression becoming stone.

“…yes.” His voice was the tiniest bit above a whisper, just barely audible.

“Wha-“ Without warning, you were cut off for the last time that night by his lips meeting yours in a passionate kiss. It lasted for a bit, with Chikage pulling you in by your waist as your arms found their way around his neck to push up some of his hair. He put all of his love into it, allowing you to see how much he’s been hiding.

The kiss left you breathless as you pulled apart.

“Yes, its true. I love you.” he whispered, his thumb stroking the bottom of your chin. “And I always will.”

You had no words to reply to him with, still caught up in trying to decipher what just happened.

“Well,” he interrupted your thoughts, “shall we head home?” He held his hand out, prompting you to take it,

You did, and were surprised by how well they fit together.

Needless to say, you were silent the whole way home after the wildest night of your life.
