synopsis: yelan manages to captures you, despite your attempts at running away from her, and begins her interrogation. it is her work, after all. but things aren’t exactly how she thinks— as the woman has a habit of missing meetings at the ministry of civil affairs…
“You find yourself in quite the predicament. I believe you weren’t expecting to wake up to this.”
You blinked yourself awake and the first sensation you felt was pain in your back. Your memory was quick to catch up, reminding you of your fight against a certain woman. Yelan.
You looked up brashly and scoffed at her, finding yourself unable to move up from your seat on the chair despite not being restrained at all. “What do you want?” you asked, tone clear of any emotions. The woman seemed to find it amusing, not bothering to hide her chuckle as she leaned back in her own seat.
“Well, if you’ve been running away from me for all this time, I believe you must know what I want from you, [alias].”
You raised your eyebrow at the use of your alias then laughed dryly. So she really had no idea why you were running away from her all this time, then. You were gonna have to blow your cover soon.
“And I believe you should attend the meetings at the ministry of civil affairs more often, Tai tai.”
“Pardon?” she asked with a smile that looked a bit tight, but wasn’t left with time to ask about the curious nickname. You sighed and got up from the chair. To your side, a fellow Fatui member was just waking up. He frantically looked around, and winced at the sight of Yelan at the desk in front of him. He immediately tried to get up but you knocked him out with a hit to the back of his neck.
Yelan furrowed her eyebrows. “What’s up with that? Rivalry between so-called comrades? That’s a bit low.”
Fuck’s sake.
To be honest, you were starting to get annoyed at how good your acting, costume and voice-changer were. She seriously didn’t have a clue. You sighed, “I needed him out for this discussion to continue.”
“Is that so?”
“Why is it that you trusted me not to flee?” you asked walking in circles in front of her desk, “After all, I’m of the Fatui. Why not tie me and this guy up to the chairs?”
She seemed intrigued, leaning her cheek against the back of her hand and tilting her head. She furrowed her eyebrows and squinted her eyes towards you. Her gaze was intimidating, despite everything, and you had to force yourself to keep eye contact. She clicked her tongue rhythmically, seemingly searching for an answer.
“It could be as simple as me knowing I could stop you before you even tried to run away.” she said quietly, “Though I admit, I didn’t sense anything of the Fatui in you. not anything of their… tricky mischievousness. No, rather… I felt a trustworthy aura around you. Only you, for some odd reason. Perhaps that is why.”
Well, maybe you weren’t that good of an actor. She was supposed to believe you to be unworthy of trust if things were going right. Oh, well. Surely everyone else bought it. This was Yelan, after all. She wasn’t just anybody.
You stared at each other for a few more seconds. There were no words exchanged but you made a show of moving a little towards the door, testing out the waters. In a second, Yelan was up and standing with her bow in hand and you teleported to the corner of the room, sword steady and ready to fight.
“If a fight is what you wish for, I should warn you I gathered a good amount of energy before you captured me. Enough to use my best attack.” you said calmly, staring at her eye behind the bow. You were referring to your ultimate attack— thorns of truth, which wrapped thorns around your opponent, restraining them, and created an area of damage large enough for anyone including you to be affected by its effects. Abolute truth. An area where you could not lie and not be tricked by any either. “Are you still up for it?”
“And why on earth wouldn’t I be?” she said, voice amused and smile visible. In a second an arrow was fired your way and you barely dodged it, catching the one that came after with your free hand barely managing to fend off the last one with your sword. You huffed.
“How much more time until you understand?”
You sliced your sword through the last arrow.
“I don’t get your point. So I figure a lot.”
She fired arrows your way and you dashed with your torse bent forward as to evade any of her attacks. You managed a slice of your sword to her leg and she jumped back, pushing her bow away and letting it disappear into thin air. You took a few steps back yourself and prepared for whatever she was—
Urgh!
She passed right through you with a form resembling a clone made of water and returned to her normal state a few meters back, unleashing Hydro particles and inflicting damage to your entire body. Though, despite the original shock of the use of her skill, it didn’t damage you half as much as you thought it would. You chuckled dryly, looking a bit over your shoulder. “I did fight back well before you captured me, didn’t I? That must’ve took a lot out of you. Because this, barely did anything.”
Yelan smiled with squinted eyes, clearly getting irritated.
“Is that so? Would you want me to mark you again? I’m sure it’ll have its effect eventually.” she said.
“I doubt it, Yelan.”
With this, you teleported forward and right to in front of her, swinging your sword so it would cut at the top of her shoulder instead of her neck directly. She crouched down quick, evading your attack and getting back up to land a good old blow to your face, with her fist alone.
You coughed and staggered back, while the woman laughed.
“You shouldn’t rely on your Vision and weapon so much, you know? Is that what the Fatui trains you to do?” she asked, panting a little. Your head hung low. To be honest, this fight was taking its toll on you. Despite what you’d said, Yelan’s elemental skill did damage you pretty hard. It was true you’d lowered her strength with your previous fight but Yelan was extremely strong— And that was exactly why you had to talk like she wasn’t. Either way she’d find an opening, a weakness, enter it and destroy it from the inside.
She’d kill you, or torment you enough to get the answers she wanted— Unaware that she could get them by just asking.
“No, that’s what HQ trained me for.” you said quietly, not letting her the chance to question what you’d just said, “I’ll repeat myself, Laopo, what is it exactly that you want?”
She stared at you through slightly hooded eyes and hummed.
“Laopo.” she repeated, “What’s it to you with the nickname? It’s bitter.” she mumbled, furrowing her eyebrows.
The only person who’d called her that was her fake spouse during an undercover mission years ago. ‘Wife’. Such a term of endearment— She wouldn’t have allowed anyone to use it in any other situation. Why was a Fatui agent using it? It didn’t make sense. Yet, it couldn’t be you, right? You’d gone missing. And you couldn’t have betrayed her and Liyue.
She huffed. “Obviously I want answers about the Fatui deals around Liyue Harbor and Inazuma’s Ritou, Narukami Island.”
You huffed and set the blade of your sword on your shoulder, care-freely. “I’ll provide that. Actually, I would’ve done that if you’d let me get things straight from the beginning.”
Suddenly, your sword was back in front of you and Thorns of Truth was unleashed. A circle of a whole few meters was engulfed with thorns, some growing on the walls and encaging Yelan before she could properly dodge them. Your own wrist was restrained by thorns and you sighed. “But you started a fight, so now I’m fired up. Let’s finish this.”
“This—?!”
“Do you finally understand?”
You took a few steps towards her, holding up your restrained arm. Her eyes were wide with realization— Understanding. You exhaled deeply, smiling a bit. “I am a member of the Ministry of Civil Affairs.”
The vines around your arm loosened, “And I am a spy in the Fatui. I’m not a real member.” you finished off, making the vines disappear entirely.
Yelan looked at you with wide eyes as you approached her, the vines slowly disappearing from her and the room entirely, lowering her back onto the floor.
“And your former fake-spouse.” you added with an innocent smile, shrugging a little. Yelan bit the inside of her lip to keep herself from insulting you.
You walked towards her until she was backed into a corner (literally) and rid yourself of your sword, before crossing your arms. “Had I told a lie, the thorns would’ve tightened.”
“I know that.” she said, annoyed. She bit her lip in anger and shook her head, a slightly manic smile taking over her lips. “I knew there was something familiar about you. y/n, of the Ministry of Civil affairs’ Intelligence Gathering department. The legend of a Captain that disappeared around a year ago.”
You took off the Fatui mask and took a breathe in, relaxing a little. Yelan scoffed at the sight of your face. You wore a slight smirk that never failed to tick her off. You really hadn’t changed. “You fool.”
You laughed. “Well, I had to keep up the act for as long as I could, didn’t I? After all, he was listening to me.” you said, pointing your thumb towards the man behind you, over your shoulder. The woman deadpanned and you smiled.
Yelan’s head hit the wall behind her and she sighed, making you chuckle. “What is it? Isn’t is fun fighting with your ex-spouse?”
“Don’t mention this failure of a fake marriage ever again, will you? It angers me to even think about it.” she seethed out. You pouted a little, tilting your head.
“Yet you did seem to like the act?”
“No, I’m just a great actress. Just as you apparently are.” she said, looking up at you with disdain. Then she closed her eyes and winced, pinching the bridge of her nose with a scowl on her face. “Archons. I can’t believe I didn’t recognize you and your stupid fighting style. And your stupid nicknames. Laopo? Tai tai? I’m almost starting to wonder if you didn’t knock out that Fatui agent just to call me your wife. What a fool. What a fool.”
“Aren’t you more angry you could’ve killed your favorite colleague because you didn’t attend the meeting that specified I was going undercover?”
“No, I’d rather not think about that, actually.”
You scoffed, eyes widening. “So you did decide not to attend because you were mad I called off the fake wedding when we agreed you would! You’re so petty.”
“Quiet down, y/n. I’ll punch you again.”
You laughed as she walked past you, huffing and muttering things to herself.
Yelan was none other than your colleague at the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as well as your partner during an undercover mission. You were considered the ace at those, and the higher-ups seemed to think you and Yelan had good chemistry, therefore sending you off to the mission together.
You had to act as a future married couple. It was funny, to you, yet blissfully unaware of the girl’s very real attraction to you, while Yelan complained about it at every chance you got to be alone. The mission was three months long, and ended urgently with you having to “call off your (fake) engagement”. Yelan was angry because she wanted to be the one to announce it.
So she was still hung up on that. That was three years ago. Your undercover mission in the Fatui was announced and began less than one year ago.
To anyone that was unaware of your mission, you were declared missing after going on a mission by yourself. That information reached Yelan eventually, and so she believed it that easily. Had she attended the meeting, she wouldn’t have had to go through so much trouble to gather all this information.
“Let’s finish off this Fatui Member and you tell me all the information you’ve gathered. Fuck, I can’t believe I worked so hard for so many things you already had in hand. You’re a real pain, y/n.”
“Maybe if you came to your workplace more often.”
“Shut it already.”
“Okay, once I’m done and come back to my normal, not-undercover life, I’ll treat you to dinner. A real date. Sounds good, ex-wife?”
“I would’ve said yes if it wasn’t for the last sentence. But yes, fine. Take me to the best restaurant in Liyue.”
“Nothing less, Laopo.”
