I HATE this attitude.

Focusing all your attention on the scientifically "sexy" things (cure for cancer, green energy solutions, cleaning plastic/carbon from the environment, etc.) is like putting blinders on. You are ignoring the beauty and wonder of our world at best, or actually keeping yourself from finding the solutions to those problems you care about at worst.

What do I mean?

A major part of science is accidentally stumbling on a major finding through research on something seemingly unrelated.

Look up "scientific discoveries made by accident," how many of them were looking into something else because they're a little freak who is interested in that specific thing? (We're all like this.) Take penicillin for example. If you apply the Twitter attitude (before the discovery): Why the hell are you studying some bread mold when people are dying from sepsis????

But also, why wouldn't you want to know more about your wonderful world with its infinite complexities?
