Having the past he does, Chip probably thinks he's unworthy of many things, but what about Gillion's love? The hero, the champion, practically royalty, raised to be everything Chip is not. In his own eyes, he hasn't changed, not really. He's a bastard and a liar and everything Gillion hates. All he can see in himself are the bad parts, and everything in Gillion is perfect.
On the flip side, Gillion probably thinks the same thing. He's been raised to believe whatever he does is unworthy, so what has he done to deserve Chip's love? The man is unabashedly human, he doesn't pretend to be anything but that. But he lets Gillion stay, despite not being human, despite pretending to be a hero that he isn't anymore. All he can see in himself are the bad parts, and everything in Chip is perfect.
(But none of that hate they think they deserve is true, but Gillion would die for Chip and Chip would kill for Gillion. They don't see the wonder, the adoration in the other man's eyes. They both need this, both need someone so vastly different to tell them that they are loved and worthy and perfect. If only they would say it.)
