Um, no. Sorry to say that, but your labmate was simply rude. I’m Polish and that’s definitely not a thing here. “Excuse me”, “Please and “Thank you” are essential unless you want to come off as a rude asshole. There’s no such thing as “wasting the listener’s time” with those. “Give me the salt” sounds extremely rude in Polish and if someone said that to me, I’d just put the salt farther away from them and wait until they ask nicely. Sure, there are people who choose to be more direct and are chill with that manner of talking, but a) it’s usually among close friends who are likely-minded, b) definitely NOT a standard.
