Questions Only - Tumblr Posts
When I was a drama teacher at a high school I had extremely talented students who taught me a lot of improv games. One of them was "questions only". The idea is you must have a scene but the dialogue is only questions. The kid who ruled it basically did so by channeling his Jewish grandmother.
Newbie student: How's it going today?
Kid who ruled: What kind of question is that? Why don't you ever call? Am I supposed to communicate with you using telepathy?
(Now utterly stunned) Newbie student:
Kid who ruled: What you got nothing to say for yourself? When are you coming home for dinner anyway? You don't like my brisket anymore?
Stunned student:
Kid who ruled: What am I, talking to myself here? Who stands there like a fish with their mouth open?
Usually by this point the entire classroom was in tears laughing and we'd have to call it done.
"Yes, and" is a very powerful concept and I support it but I'm also
1. very oppositional, and
2. Jewish
so I think we should also have another different type of improv where everyone argues with each other about what bit they are doing the whole time.
