Derrick gifted Penelope a rare, incredibly beautiful bird that has an undeniable resemblance to Penelope. The bird resides in a cage in Derrick's office. If Penelope wants to visit her pet she needs to gain permission from Derrick to see her, similar to how Penelope can't do much of anything without permission from her father or Derreck.
Enzo gifted Ruby a beautiful, small bird that mirrors her own soft beauty. When Ruby did something that angered Cesare, instead of bringing out the whip, he waited for her in the room where her bird was kept and forced her to watch him feed her bird to his snapping turtle. Cesare gets very creative with all of the ways in which he leaves his sister mentally, emotionally, and physically scarred.
